Everton vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Got a bit of time today, so my thoughts for what they're worth:

Henderson - 6. Didn't do much wrong, but also can't deny they scored two goals from about two shots.

Munoz - 8. A constant threat in possession and such a key part of what we're about. Well taken goal.

Richards - 6. Solid enough...not much asked of him but passing and distribution much improved from this time a year ago - worth acknowledgement.

Lacroix - 5. Would've been a 6 as well, but have to lose a point for the silly challenge in the box.

Guehi - 7. A quiet night defensively, but starts so many attacks with incisive passes into the mids.

Mitchell - 6. A pretty quiet evening...nothing good or bad of note really.

Wharton - 9. MOTM. Outstanding displace of craft, guile and also aggression in the absence of his more naturally-aggressive partner. Ran the show with intelligent switches of play and teasing through-balls.

Kamada - 6. Nothing really of note. Couple of nice passes, but also caught out a couple of times. Buzzed around a bit without much impact.

Pino - 8. Looks quality. Should've had a couple of assists but for better finishing. Energetic, creative and getting better as time goes on.

Sarr - 7. Top assist, but otherwise pretty quiet night.

Mateta - 4. Love him...but not his night tonight. Let the team down with poor finishing. Always a handful for defences and a great target man to hold up play...but we need him finding the target more.

SUBS: 5. Generally didn't make much impact...and happened too late into the piece.

Cheers 🙂

Pretty fair summary. We are adjusting to a new thing, Thursday European games. We were the better team but sometimes that doesn't get the result, remember our smash and grab at Brighton.

When we get enough points for top 8 in Conference league we can rest and rotate so IMHO we need to get this done is as few games as possible.

We have had a great few months, this is a blip

Pretty good Summary sprites but why call out Lacoix for his defensive lapse and not Munoz who had a brain fart for Evertons winner ?

Much is made of the ways players will cope with the physical demands of the extra games they are being asked to play but yesterday showed that mental tiredness is possibly the bigger issue .

Was it? Looked like he punched him in guts. I thought he got saved because there wasn't a better angle and Tarkowski stayed on his feet. If that had been Grealish he'd be rolling around on the floor and I reckon Uche goes.

Garner got a yellow didnt he?
Punched? He poked him with a finger after being obstructed off the ball out of play, Tarkowski took a few seconds to realise he had an opportunity to cheat and fell over from the knife wound.

Get real

Morning after and I’m still pissed of that we lost our undefeated record in a game like that but then I guess that was always going to be the way it went. It’s certainly calmed me down and put my over reaching back in its box. If we had beaten Everton we would have gone into the October international break 2nd. I May have exploded with champions league thoughts and dare we dream of doing a Leicester.

Now back to reality. We are a bloody good premier league team who will give anybody a game now and hold our own. I no longer look at fixtures and dread when the big boys come around.

Ollie was excellent in his post match conference. He was clearly hurt and as he said sometimes you need to feel that to learn and we will.

However I still maintain the ref was awful. He gave them every 50/50 and on a couple of occasions he gave them the 70/30s that should clearly have been our free kick. He absolutely had a bee in his bonnet for Wharton too.

We always screw up against them or Newcastle. The ref was a homer but none of his poor decisions affected the outcome of the game. Some of our players were losing it but they should know better.

We were poor in the second half and you just knew it was coming. Grealish who had done nothing scores a tap in and the papers are already saying he's due an England recall, not on yesterday's game he wasn't.

Anyway we lost and that is that. What is important now is we don't fold so we need to win the next game.

TBF Ithought it was a penalty. However there was something very odd about how he constantly penalised Wharton.
Read his WIKI are we really that short of refs that he has not been sacked?

Seeing that Salisbury was born near Preston, I was wondering if he had something against Wharton and Blackburn? As you mention, to constantly single out a player for supposed misdemeanours is very odd indeed.

Pretty much spot on. I might have given Kamada 7 for his first half performance but accept he dropped off second half. Pino might be a 7 for similar reasons, but Mateta’s 4 lost the game for us.

The ref was very poor but I can’t attribute our loss to him, that sadly has to be on Mateta, whose finishing was woeful. He should’ve put that game beyond Everton’s reach, you just cannot repeatedly miss those kind of chances without being punished. His one on ones with the keeper are a huge concern and currently his general strike rate is just not up to scratch.

Needs to improve or Eddie will be due a run of games to see how he fares.

I can, he was one of their best midfielders, breaking down our attacks and turning them into counter attacks.

It’s the palace rollercoaster so probably go on a 19 losing run
It was weird to experience a defeat after such a long time. Not good and only just starting to get over it now. Definitely one that could have been avoided with better finishing and also that ability to stay defensively tight when the other team is on top which has been one of the hallmarks of our unbeaten run. A shame as we played them off the park for the first 3/4 of the game.
I was also thought it might have been a bit cheeky to start singing "we're going to the win league" in the first half !!!

3-1 to us would have been a fairer scoreline based on the play.
It was a joy to see how we played in the first half.
Defensively solid, but at the same time very dangerous going forward with fluidity in midfield and attack.
Even when we are not purring we have the weapon of the long throw which opponents tend to struggle with.

Pino already looks like he’s been with us for a while as he’s settled in seamlessly with lots of clever movement and endeavour.
Wharton looked like a Rolls Royce player with his control and weight of pass.

I’m not too concerned about Mateta’s touch in front of goal deserting him in recent games.
He has 50 goals for us and has proved over the last couple of seasons that he is generally a good finisher.
As long as we continue to create chances I’m sure that he will continue to prosper.

JPM is in the kind of form in front of goal that gave Edouard his chance, some of his misses have been horrendous. This game should have been put away long before the penalty, let alone the winner.
He has certainly lost some of his sharpness this season and is missing chances that last season he would have buried. We desperately need him firing on all cylinders ASAP.

I thought it wasn't a tap in but that Munoz kicked his clearance and it rebounded off Grealish's foot with no effort from Grealish at all.

I had a feeling it wasn't going to end well for us after Mateta scuffed his shot wide in the second half.

You can't keep letting the opposition off and expect to win games at this level.

Both goals conceded were cheap, but that's Everton for you. In pure footballing terms they deserved nothing from the game. Lacroix was a little unfortunate, not initially realising he had a player behind him and when he did he pulled his leg away but couldn't avoid contact. And that ref gave us very little all afternoon so a pen it was. And the Munoz clearance was reminiscent of when Lacroixs clearance came off Guehi at Brighton last season.

Only ourselves to blame ultimately. Glasner has consistently complained of the inability to finish opponents off and this was another example.

Agree, initially i thought it was definitely a pen, but on the replay you could see Lacroix pulling out of the tackle and if anything the Everton player ran across his outstretched leg.
I knew it wouldn't be overturned after it was given on field but VAR barely looked at it.

Grealish got a little lucky with his goal as it clearly just hit him from the clearance but he celebrated like it was a brilliant finish.

Ref was poor, as has been mentioned multiple times, the foul and booking of Wharton was simply bizarre, a perfect tackle. Also soon after Eddie was free in the centre after an Everton player lost possession and the player seemed to rugby tackle him to stop the break. He made it look clumsy rather than dirty but it was a booking all day long. Instead we didn't even get a foul.
Whereas Grealish who goes down so easily merely looked at the ref and he got a foul every time.
