England V Greece - a rant

I wasn't really watching the pre-match stuff, just eating dinner off a lap tray (liver & bacon with carrots, cabbage and runner beans, if you're interested), when the National Anthem was being played and the camera was panning along the line of players. I think it may have been Cole Palmer on the end of the line, but I'm not sure as there are quite a few in the squad now that I don't recognize, so it could well be one of the subs, so if I am wrongly accusing Palmer I apologise.

Whilst singing the anthem, this guy looked like he had a peeled lime stuck in both ends, and you could just tell by the sour expression on his face that he hated that he had to sing it. I don't know if the players have been told that they must sing, but it was very obviously a really unpleasant chore for this bloke!

As the anthem ended, by which time the camera was full on him, he sang his last 'God save the King' and immediately followed it by the word 'Arsehole' - trust me, after 50 years of being deaf I can lip read!

Now my rant is this - if you accept to play for this country, a Constitutional Monarchy of very long standing, then you do not, ever, in front of TV cameras, call your King an ars*hole - if you don't like him fine, if you don't want to sing the anthem, that's fine too - just stand quietly and respectfully until it is over, but if you are happy to pull on the shirt that allows you to represent this nation, then show some respect for it in all it's ways or F. off, there are plenty of others who would be proud to.

A man who has achieved little more in his life that shitting in his nappies and kicking a bag of air about has no business so publicly disrespecting, at an International match, his Monarch who has achieved more for this country than he ever will or could even dream of.

What has happened to this once proud country, where it was considered an honour and a privilege to wear the shirt?

Rant over - tin hat on for incoming!

Long gone I’m afraid, it’s all a bit of an inconvenience now, I wonder what some of the warriors of the past think of it all now, Terry Butcher who looked like a victim in a Tarrantino film, Tony Adams, Bryan Robson playing with a dislocated shoulder, Stuart Pearce etc

I didn't notice because I was flitting between watching the telly and using my tablet, but if it is the case that Gordon said that, I hope it's not overlooked or left to fade away.

He needs to be quizzed about it too see his response. He'll probably climb up his own arse and deny it.

Played for 90 minutes like Palace often have lin first 45 this season !
Yes, I have often felt that watching England is reminiscent of watching Palace struggle to break down opposition defences and then concede to a breakaway goal. The only difference is that with Palace I experience pained frustration that can last for days whereas with England I can shrug my shoulders and switch the TV off.

there is to much international football its ruining the game and its so so boring !!!

No matter how much they big up this nations league, it was brought in to replace friendlies, but they’re still just friendlies really. I heard someone on tv say it’s Englands first ‘competitive’ defeat at Wembley for four years, competitive my arse.
As you say there’s too much international football now, usually the World Cup qualifiers would’ve started in September, now they’ll all be crammed into a year instead of 18 months to fit in these nations league games

I'm happy to say I missed it. Mrs POG and I were out at Goodwood listening to a talk about George Stubbs, the artist renowned in particular for his paintings of horses.

I have to say there's more movement in his paintings than in an England football team.

I fear that 'too much' International football has diluted the importance, prestige and privilege of playing for your country.

Add to that most footballers being equally if not more so celebrities these days and the fact they play far more football at club level too, 'playing for England' is certainly not what it used to be.

It's therefore not surprising for me if a scouser feels as though he has to live up to a stereotype expected of him/he expects of himself, players pull out of internationals either literally or in performance terms, and a football fan like me who of course supports his country has such little care for int'l games I barely watched the match yesterday, was more on in the background, nor cared for the result.

Given up with them. For ages I'd thought we had the players to be a good team but perhaps I was wrong. I cannot remember the last time I've seen them play and thought they were good. All the hype about how well they've done getting to finals and semi finals - never once have they looked like
a good team.

Put an England shirt on Foden and he plays like a nervous pansy. I'll stop there...
