Eng Vs NZ

And that has always been the rub with England in summer tournaments in hot places.

I never understood how the Germans did it.
It's not really good enough in a world where conditions can be prepared for. In the 1970s, fine. I have no idea what the heat is like for people of African descent either. I would have thought that they should be able to handle it better than I could for instance. But as I say, I genuinely don't know. It's not exactly only Moore and Charlton these days.

After recent tournaments being very close contenders, Ive a horrible feeling we may well get a dose of 80s England, failing to get out of group or knocked out first sudden death game after the group stage.
The whole feeling is very 'not at the races'
(hope im wrong!)

England have as much of winning as CPFC getting a new stand. That's a dog's chance or no chance. Can't see the point of staying up till gone 1.00am to watch a bunch of average, over paid players (except Kane ) stumble around and lose when they play a real side as proven in recent tournaments

Early days. England will qualify from their group. And let's not forget Guihi and Eze are in the team and they both had a major effect on the run in to the League Title. I was surprised how fit and keen Rashford looked. And you can't go wrong with a Palace keeper, they get so much testing in any Palace season. Just don't play that other plonker, he'll probably get himself sent off! And my 5 pound bet will earn me a staggering 35 pounds when they lift the cup!! 🙂🙂🙂

I've watched plenty of world cups over the years. It is like any big sporting event. You can't win the tournament in the group stages but you can certainly lose it. The teams that are going to be successful will need to win their first 2 group games and then look to rest their key players in the third match. Don't overexert yourselves and expose all your attacking play at this stage either. Avoid unnecessary bookings that can lead to suspensions down the line. You will need strength in depth in your squad to cope with the summer head and that bit of luck.
My take on England's chances are they have a decent all round squad and have a decent midfield. I just think that both defensively and offensively they maybe a world class player light in these areas. I can see them reaching the 1/4's or possibly the semi's but teams like France and Spain look to have superior squads and players. Having said that if they do get to say the 1/4 final's they won't be easy to beat and you never know. In some way's they are a bit like some of the German teams of old where they rarely fluffed their lines and were always in later stages of nearly all major competition's.
The New Zealand friendly was the as Glasner frequently refered to about players finding their rhythm and will have little bearing on how to play against Croatia.

In defence of little old NZ, we were pretty bloody good for the first half hour or so. You certainly wouldn’t have been able to tell who was 4th vs 84th in the world.

But agree, England were poor and lackluster. Oh for someone like Wharton to get them around the field.

An optimistic view I think. I can see no evidence that England are a half decent side in recent games. I think they’ll struggle to get through the group stage. We shall see.

It was an awful pitch. The MCC have got huge issues with that square and will face the prospect of not hosting Test Matches (God forbid) if it continues.

Our bowlers took advantage and with Atkinson, Robinson & Tongue all bowling with control we were comfortable winners. Emilio Gay made a promising debut and it was nice to see that in general, we batted with a lot more common sense than in The Ashes.

Still a shocking pitch though.

That is not what England do.

Other high ranking teams do. They like to get the 2 wins and then rotate the squad for the final game.

For us, the 1st 2 games are excessively cautious with a squeaky win, a really boring draw but a more free flowing final game where we tonk the opponent and take that confidence into the knock-out stages.

It is all about energy management, limiting injury and a low discipline count.

Tuchel may be different..?

England decided against bringing world class players and raided Spurs and Newcastle instead.

Hope not.

Different world. We have closed the gap on our main rivals in terms of body conditioning etc. In the 1980s the players were boozers who liked to party till late. These guys are (mainly) teetotal and in bed by 9pm. Every second of their day is carefully calibrated in terms of physical and psychological toning, diet etc. to give them that 2% more that swings the balance in tough, close games.

1980s opponents were smart-savvy playing every rule and referee to their advantage. We are just as good as any at that game management now as the players are in the same teams and learn from the "best".

And all the way up to Southgate, England had to play from a set manual (an actual manual) so we were predictably direct, playing against the form the players knew from their league game and were always a disjointed mess. Ericsson, for instance, had to follow the manual to the letter to keep his job. He is heavily criticized for spoiling the "Golden Generation" but it was not wholly his fault.

But it is the attitude where the real change is. The summer tournaments always got in the way of more bling, holidays with the WAGs and full recovery before the more lucrative and valuable club season began. England players are now going to tournaments with the actual purpose of winning; not just selling sports merchandise and jetting off early with a shrug towards their expensive villa.

Off course, we may bow out early coz we're crap.
