Eighth place could get Europe?

Location
Hastings
Country
England
So many scenarios but if the Premier League get given five champs league places, Chelsea win the Conference League and we don't win the cup, the Europa Leagues places will go to the 6th and 7th placed teams and the 8th placed team qualify for the Conference League. And we can get 8th - 7th is a bridge too far realistically, and if we get past Villa at Wembley it looks like winning the cup gets us the Europa League and losing it gets us the Conference League - if we finish 8th. Tough run-in though, but our league season is not dead, we should not just be aiming for a token top half spot. There was a scenario where 11th could get Europe, but that was unlikely when it was first pointed out and is probably impossible now. It's not being wildly optimistic to think we can't overtake Bournemouth, Fulham and Brighton.

Just looking at the table, if we played our game in hand and won it right now we'd be only 5 points off 7th place. Not saying we will make 7th. I'm well aware how tough our run in is but it is not beyond the realms of possibility for a form team to give it one big push in the last 7 games and jump 4 league places.
Personally I think we'll get no higher than 8th but we've seen other clubs do it. Why cant it be our turn to raise a few eyebrows and ruffle a few feathers!

I think we’re doing that anyway, other teams and some pundits hate us with our small dilapidated ground out doing some of the big boys who spend billions in their flash new grounds

actually Chelsea don't even have to win the Conference League as long as they finish in a Europa League place (fifth or sixth depending on the coefficient) - 8th place could get us trips to Qarabags, Shamrock Rovers and/or Dynamo Arsendofbeyond ... not to mention Athletico Ghosttown and Kronenbourg 1664.

We'll get in by winning the Cup.

Anything else is defeatist talk.

I think it is more the £££ they spend on ensuring monopoly of the media who then have to compliment us through gritted teeth.

I have a feeling we are due a drop off in league form this month. With city, Newcastle and arsenal up next.

All away games tho so who knows.

Well it is minimum 8 in Europe now. 5 Champions, 2 Europa and 1 Conference. We are currently 5 points behind 8th-placed Fulham with a game in hand
I may have this wrong but if Villa do not finish top 5 but win Champions League that adds 1 more as does Spurs or United winning Europa. Finally, if Chelsea have not qualified otherwise and win the Conference then they are in
So the 11th place is still, theroretically, in play. We will have a better idea later in the week
As an earlier poster mentioned we have three tough matches coming up but on the bright side, City look terrible, Arsenal will probably be much more concerned about the Champions League and Newcastle owe us one after they recorded probably the lowest xG of any team in any match this year and still got away with a 1-1 game in our home tie

11th place is only any use to us if one of United or Spurs wins the Europa League, and finishes 10th or higher. We would still have to pass at least 2 of the teams above us to qualify.
I’m not too clear on what the effect of Chelsea winning the Conference League might be. The way I read it, this will only generate an extra European place if they finish 2 places or more behind the Champions League quailifiers.
I don’t know if anyone can provide a bit of clarity on this.

Basically Chelsea winning the Conference League has no effect, but their final league position does.

If they won the Conference they'd go into the Europa League, so the Conference place would stay with the EFL winners, i.e. Newcastle, who should finish top six so the Conference place goes to 7th, but the cup winner gets a Europa place and they're all (apart from us) in the top 7 already so the Conf place goes down to 8th. Chelsea will only qualify for the Conference if they don't win it this year and come and come 8th (unless we win the cup and stay mid table, then 7th place gets the Conf) - 6th place gets Europa League, so does 7th if the cup winner ain't us so the 8th team gets the Conference league.

Geez that’s confusing. Maybe we just win the most games we can and wait 😀

Should finishing 8th - 11th really warrant a place in Europe?
For me it would be a bit like winning a competition on penalties, which always seems , at least to me, a little unsatisfactory even if it’s in the rules.

I may be in a minority in this view , but there are also practical issues.
There were occasions in the first half of the season when we had 3 untried youngsters and two goalkeepers on the bench.
The paucity of squad options was obvious to all and this could be compounded in the summer with a number of players out of contract.
With likely outgoings and a heavier schedule incorporating the Premier League and Europe we could need 6 new additions and I can’t see that happening.

Some will say we’ll cross that bridge if we come to it and just , for once, want to see Palace in Europe whatever the circumstances.
I wouldn’t be one of those.

midfdield and attacking wise we've got two squads already - Nketiah, Esse and Franca and six midfielders: Doucoure, Lerma, Devenny and Kamada behind Wharton and Hughes. Kpfora and Clyne are back up wing backs but we would need an extra one, and another centre back alongside Riad and Ward, may make that two centre backs. So to have two teams, one for the prem and one for Europe/ cups we only need three more players, who can double up as defenders or wing backs, and you could see Devenny or Esse as a temp wing back, and some old James Tompkins/Martin Kelly type loanees could plug the holes without us having to scour the transfer market too hard.

Well given there are over 100 teams entering the league phases of the three competitions, yes. The 11th team in the EPL would surely be one of the hundred best in Europe
TBH, the Conference League is a Micky Mouse competition - West Ham won it FFS - but it would still be fun for the fans and could give fringe/U21 players good experience.
If we made Europa, we could follow Villa's example and bring in some loan signings in January if we got to the knock-out stage. A limited commitment covered by progressing that far

Not sure we do have 2 teams as it's pretty obvious when 2 or 3 are missing the replacements are just not up to scratch.

Nketiah and Kamada are nowhere near good enough to play regularly and Esse, Devenny and Kporha have barely 10 appearances between them.

We are definitely not a Chelsea in terms of squad depth.

Whilst i'd love an European opportunity part of me thinks it will be a disaster if we have to play regularly on a Thursday with essentially the same team each week.

I feel that being in Europe will be a burden unless it is in a competition that will attract quality players to the club.
No one cares about the Conference League unless you win it, and only we will care if we did.

If I can arrange a three day holiday in Lisbon or Copenhagen one evening of which is watching the boys in a strange stadium against a team with a kit even weirder than hours then I will be a very happy bunny regardless of the result. Add to that wandering through historic alleyways bedecked in red and blue and bantering over beer with like minded fellows - a description of heaven on earth if ever there was one.
