Crystal Palace vs. Rayo Vallecano match thread

Funny enough, when we won the FA Cup, I was completely overwhelmed with emotion — huge tears, the lot. It was the moment I’d dreamed of for years finally coming true. The buzz lasted for days, and the media were all over Palace.

Last night’s Conference League win was brilliant, but strangely, I didn’t quite get that same feeling. Maybe it would have been different if I’d been there in person, like I was at Wembley.

Must say, thought the coverage by TNT was excellent last night
I was there last night and I felt the same.
Maybe because I was in a neutral area but the celebrations weren't as big when we won, and I wasn't uncontrollably sobbing, hugging strangers like I was at Wembley. The FA Cup was a far bigger deal to me, whereas winning the Conference League was more of a "nice to have"

Agree, stadium feeling not as massive as FA Cup, but nothing could be... but similar sense of joyful relief to hear the final whistle (it was very nervy after not putting them away in the first 15 mins of second half) and slight disbelievement we have made it to the summit again...

... these are topsy turvey times, and if you look to next season, with so many Premier League teams in Europe, it won't just be us that struggle with a lot of games...

... if we keep the team culture and keep a lid on wages (which helps the team culture anyway) we are well placed to meet the inevitable changes next year will bring.

I would agree the fa cup was something we had failed to win on two occasions and with the Top Clubs dominating the domestic cup competitions and having favourable draws where the top 4 Avoid eachover. The fa cup was an Emotional Day and man city was a massive Win. It give us a chance to play in the charity shield next season which is normally always between 2 of the top 6 Teams in the premier league. Very rare for a Team below the top 6 to win the Fa cup.

FA Cup was the pinnacle for our club (so far) as our biggest achievement. I was emotionally overwhelmed at Wembley like most of us. However, the last few days and winning this competition was for different reasons, just an amazing experience. The amount of Palace fans in Leipzig was unreal, met friends and made new friends! Shared our stories, laughed, drank too much and celebrated how we know best! I agree with everyone that the FA cup is more important but after I was so sceptical about Europe- I’ve just loved it - my bank account hasn’t though.

I suspect you also have me in mind in respect of your comments !!!!
Perhaps I need to change my name to 'Whingeing Willo'.

Returning the game last night it is the model of plausibility that the RV supporters were confident of victory given that they were 8th in the League, had not lost in 9 games and we were a team who finished 15th in the PL and were not in the best of form. They got a rude awakening !
From my interactions with some, they were not particularly confident and thought the game could go either way ( so did I). They did call us the “money club” 😂 but when you look at our respective incomes this season, you can see why. Their supporters were brilliant stayed after the whistle, were friendly and joined in the celebrations post match. Saw some even swapping shirts with Palace fans!
With regard to the reported trouble, I suspect it was a preplanned attack. We had walked passed the bar just before and it was packed with many families there.

Same. Don’t get me wrong I still can’t believe we have won a European trophy and will always be grateful I could be there to witness it. No tears though unlike Wembley

We are probably all suffering from ‘Winning Fatigue’. It’s getting very wearing….lol

I get this. Rayo fans were decent and there were quite a few around me and next to me so I felt like being more respectful at the final whistle (I went absolutely nuts when we scored however).

Beating City was a bit David vs Goliath compared to beating Rayo when slight favourites was always going to feel a bit different so natural the immediate reaction wasn't quite on the same high.

I wouldn't say it was a "nice to have" though - I'll be dining out on this all summer! Amazing experience and loved seeing so many Palace travel out. Incredible numbers.

It was never going to be like the FA Cup - we've waited years for that moment. I don't think we've really thought about the European Conference cup until we were in it.

The atmosphere towards the end was special though, not much tension but happiness. We're are keeping the journey going.

Who gets medals for this game? I heard Eze and Guehi were entitled and I just saw this Uche goal.

Currently the FA cup gives 40 medals, who gets them is decided by the club. Any ideas on the process here?

Nah, the ZDS Cup was the big one.

I understand in terms of the Conference League 50 medals are issued to be distributed at the club's discretion.

I know you say it in jest, but at the time it was a big deal, especially after the pain of the year before, it helped with our recovery 🤣 it was such a great performance from a great team in an incredible atmosphere against a very good Everton team at that time

You'd like to think everyone gets one who contributed Guehi, Eze, Uche, Esse and the 3 young lads who played against KuPs Drakes-Thomas, Benamar and King was it?

I was fully confident we would win the game if we scored the first goal.

Which of course we duly did.

That opening 15 minutes of the second half made the difference, if we could have added a second goal I think Rayo would have faded away. But at only 0-1 they still had hope.

Lots of big performances from our boys when it was needed. Wharton was the obvious eye catcher and then we had a back three that may not have played together much as a unit, but had been so well drilled tactically that it didn't show.

Kudos to the Rayo fans. Having read the reports of Tuesday's incident I wasn't sure what to expect when I arrived on Wednesday afternoon, but I thought they were excellent - in many ways similar to ourselves in not being ' Big Club, Big Time Charlies '.
