Crystal Palace vs. Millwall match thread

Perhaps because we plucked Olise and Eze from the championship and turned them into world-beaters, there were expectations that Esse would be the same.

Highly unlikely we'll see the hat-trick unfortunately, and it might be a bit unfair on him to expect that.

Could it be this pressure that's affecting him, or have our recruitment team just got this one wrong ? My leaning is towards the latter.
Like Southampton a few years ago we have had a successful streak in finding bargain players. However it was bound to happen that we would have a few failures. Look at West Ham / Everton and Man United.

We all hope that Esse makes it but if we are shopping in the bargain basement the odds are you will pick up a few turkeys.

Apropos Esse, I believe I averred on HOL when he was signed that I saw him play for Millwall in a televised game and I concluded that it was certainly not a stand-out performance. I only saw him once but I never concluded that he was a young player with real potential.
I was somewhat aghast at the transfer fee.
I do hope for our sakes that he proves to be an excellent acquisition.

My position with Kamada is that perhaps his critics could be more realistic.

I'm not sure what they expect.

He was a cost effective versatile player who Glasner knew and trusted who became available. He has a good mentality, is rarely injuried and after finding it hard to instantly integrate into the league and team managed it quite effectively.....but he's never going to rip the opposition apart.

I don't think his best position in the Premiership is in the forward line, but he's played there because of squad size, injuries and scant options.

He isn't Olise, he isn't Eze......Do people realise how rare those players are for a club like us? Our stadium houses 26 thousand...less than Leeds even if we get the new build.

We have had and possibly still are having a relative golden period in our transfer business and because we aren't getting superstars in all the time in an environment where many other same sized clubs are competing.....There's criticism.

It is what it is and while Kamada isn't a superstar compared to playing in the best league in the world, he would be a superstar in most Palace teams that I've loyally watched most of my time growing up with Palace......We are in rare times.

No, but if you are progressive and looking for through balls etc, you are going to misplace some.

Or in his case, pretty much all of them for this match, aside that very simple 4 yard pass at the end.

I'm not picking him out but I am, if you compare him to Esse he has got away with a lot of bad performances, likely it's because he played succesfully for Glasner before so he has money in the bank. Esse has clearly been affected and confused but I'm not defending his performance because it was dire. I happen to think other players had poor games, Yeremy made a lot of poor choices, 2 dummies that weren't close to coming off were frustrating but he was involved and looked like he could make something happen on another day. JP underperformed. Sosa hit crosses into the keepers hands all night. Glasner also pointed out that it wasn't all on Esse at the presser but the press kept on asking him about Esse.

Positively I was really pleased with Canvot, that was a really solid debut. Richards showed that he can play either side too, and Le Croissant was his solid self. Benitez I expected to perform, he's had a quality career and it's awesome to have such quality goalkeepers at the club.

The man of the match was the referee. He let a firm but fair game flow without the need to keep stopping play and I think it was a good lesson for some of the new players about the toughness of English football, especially Yeremy. Much better than that shithouse we had v Sunderland.

he had their attackers for breakfast, albeit a continental one, they tried to go through our defence like a knife through butter, but he had them on a plate, crumbs he was good, a bit flaky at times, but he always takes his time, he's never too pastry. 🙂

I don't agree at all, he has amazing ball control, the Millwall fans all say he's the best thing they've produced for donkey's years and we saw evidence of that at home to Wolves last season. Even the other night he did a neat trick to line up a shot before he got intercepted, the more telling play was when he unleashed a tame short first half instead of feeding Mateta who found a gap between defenders and just needed a simple pass through to put him in on goal. Clearly Esse's problems are in his head not his feet, he comes across like a bright lad but he's struggling to integrate his skill into the team, but Eze and Olise were guilty of that at times in their earliest games here. I thought the tears at Anfield might be a turning point but he seems to have gone backwards rather than forwards - it's clear he needs guidance, it's also possible he's getting guidance but isn't yet able to take it on board.

Absolute prime example, and you know this is the sort of thing that will drive Glasner crazy.

Unfortuently at the moment he cant be trusted. And in a week or so Sarr will be back anyway

As I stated I only witnessed Esse in one game.
I have also mentioned on HOL that I know a Millwall supporter of many years and he averred that Esse was the best player they had produced for a while but he was one for the future, was not ready for the PL just yet.

Is that the 4 yard ball through to Munoz for the JPM chance? Interesting that you classify that as a simple 4 yard pass. And demonstrates why he can never do any good in your eyes.

He'll play 40 games this season and start pretty much all of them, at some point you need to wake up and stop being so negative. Glasner doesn't suffer fools.

The somewhat ironic thing being that Glasner will be off at the end of the season and Esse is with us for another four years.

There is a player there but he's one of those that needs time, games and maturity.....needed a season loan but we were low on numbers.

Sounds a very believable take.

He's very new to the highest possible standard of football and he's young too. Some are just born with that undying confidence, others have to develop it.

Unfortunately for Romain his opportunity to do so will be limited, given the demands/pressure on the team at this level, and thus his shelf-life at Palace too. Let's hope he steps up for our sake as well as his own.

Agree with this. I am a fan of Kamada, he is a good player and we saw him at his best in the Cup Final. But there are days when the radar is a bit off. Tuesday was one of those days, too many passes failed to reach their intended target. He wasn’t the only one to have an off night but even so, he was still better than most.

i think the passing in general was shocking on Tuesday and has been a bit of an issue for quite a while under Glasner.

Kamada is clearly a lot better than this time last year, but overhit or under hit a number of quite simple passes - the one to JP in the 1st half after a quick free kick was shocking. He was no means alone.

Pino did similar a few times and even Hughes was a bit off at times. Mateta had an off day, even before the late miss, and whilst Esse was poor, i thought quite a few could have been subbed at half time.

Against decent Prem sides you can understand it but we were essentially playing Millwall reserves. Not good enough

I suspect that if we had a similar No 9 to Mateta, he would have been rested.
In our squad we do not have a player in that mould, it has been said that Sarr and Uche could be deployed in that position but neither are a No 9.

Seems like this thread has morphed into an Esse/Kamada discussion albeit the latter is in large part due to one poster’s negative view of him. I think we can all agree young Esse had a shocker. He has talented feet and can do a few tricks but so far we’ve not seen evidence of the footballing brain to go with the talent or the work rate required at this level. He was caught on the ball too often, didn’t get his head up enough to see a pass and on the few occasions when he did he fluffed his lines. By halftime he looked broken and bereft of confidence so that subbing him was a kindness.
As for Kamada he will always be marmite perhaps due to his indifferent start. Personally, I see him as a mature footballer who is always positioning himself cleverly whether that be when we have the ball or without it. He finds space when attacking and covers space when we’re defending. He sees a pass as well as Hughes although neither is as good as Wharton at seeing and executing one. He has a decent shot and is a threat in the box, but is also capable of winning the ball back defensively. As I say he started badly last season but by the end was and continues to be one of our most effective players. Perhaps young Esse can take note and improve his game to the same extent.
