Crystal Palace vs. Middlesbrough match thread

I didnt see the game, but have read 3 reports on the match and watched the highlights, and the media reports, seem vastly different from most "experts" on here, 3 very good goals, some good one touch play, Larsen doing what he dose best, heading, and nice one touch lay offs, a back three who not only have never played together, but two who have played only 14 games between the last year and an 18 year old kid, a game we would have lost last season, 3 goals back to back, what do people expect, Arsenal, Man city, Real Madrid, cut then a bit of slack, 3 league games and i cup game, can we have some realism please.

Agreed, Morris was the best midfielder on the pitch
 
I was thinking that most problems would be fixed if we had a player like Damiano Tommasi or Claude Makelele, a genuine defensive midfielder, and then I thought, well we do, Cheik Doucoure - if reports are to believed he was supposed to be on the bench for yesterday's game and possibly get some game time. What happened?

Mingueza crossed for Larsen's first - I think Osorio may have passed to Oscar after Honest's fabulous forward run
 
What a strange game. I was there last night, and thought Middlesbrough were passing the ball around so well in the first half. They were a class above us.

Second half was different - a team that had never played together before gained confidence, and some of our passing and match play was impressive.

Our defence CB’s were more organised - really impressed with Disasi - he is the ball winner we needed - and is a beast in the air. Ahanor really grew into the game - and I prefer him over Canvot. Tomiyasu was also passing the ball out from defence with accuracy. On that showing, Richards & Canvot should be worried.

I agree, that back 3 of Tomiyasu, Disasi and Ahonor looked more cohesive and in more control than Richards, Disasi and Canvot. Ahonor looks like an absolute gem and it’s going to be horrible yet again training up a young player for Chelsea to reap the benefits next season.

I think it’s good that Canvot and Richards have got proper competition however as they were getting straight into the side regardless of their form and this might up their performances.

I think the journalists are just writing the easy story that will fit half a column of print for a game not many neutrals will be interested in rather than a thousand word piece on this remarkable, and as someone just posted, strange game of football. I think the posts here reflect that and many are realistic.

You could clip up a montage of Hughes looking like the midfield boss but equally you could make him look like a huge liability in the centre of the park. The old guy whose legs have gone.

You should make Mingueza look like a stylish attacking full back or you could show him get beat time and time again by their number 9.

Middlesbrough were camped on the edge of our box for a lot of the first half. But they barely tested the keeper.

Palace kept giving the ball away and were played through at times like rank amateurs. But on occasion in the first half and frequently in the second half, when the game was as good as won, played some really beautiful flowing football from back to front.

But easier to write 'routine win for premier league side' than explore at length the incredible inconsistencies of the teams and individuals on the pitch.

In the end we did have the quality and end product that made the difference. I'm sure the manager learned a lot. On reflection a great game!
 
Hughes sorry old boy your legs are gone see that when he bust through on goal , it looked like he hit a brick wall , would say he is good for 20 to 30 mins , he did do alot of bad passing mixed in with some good ,
Mingozna did at times looked well out of it , its watch this space with him ,
Larsen all the time he gets on the end of crosses I don't have a issue ,
Orsario and Gozo to early to judge ,
Middlesbrough should of been out of site no , its no good getting to the penalty area and do nothing with it , I have heard plenty of complaints of us doing that on here ,
So another game another different 11 , lets see how close Sage get to the team in the first 3 lge games Saturday , 🦅🦅🦅
 
A final reflection on last night’s game. It was entertaining much like Fulham at the weekend. In recent times football in general has been a tough watch with the majority of passes sideways or backwards especially between the centre backs. It’s refreshing to see us look to attack quickly either with one touch passes or the occasional long ball. We try to press wherever the opposition has the ball rather than sit deep and while we are vulnerable to teams playing through us it definitely makes for a better watch.

It was Mingueza that crossed the ball for the goal. Obviously, too soon to judge Osorio but he had a poor game
 
Hughes is getting a lot of stick. He did well as a DCM. Yes terrible in front of goal - we all remember OG telling him off last season for some awful shots. But he put a solid shift in. He and Lerma are acceptable cover until Doucoure can be relied on again. Even Wharton was slack when he came on, assuming the game was won.

At 18, Ahonor has the world at his feet. Composed performance from the young lad. Very impressive.

I like the different option Timber gives us; we have missed the energy and mobility in midfield since Gallagher played for us.

I was hoping to see Osorio assert himself a bit more against "lower" opposition, but he is still finding his feet.

Middlesbrough controlled a lot of the possession in 1st half, but without creating many clear cut chances. JSL was decisive with the opportunities he had. There was an obvious quality gap ; Prem experience shows that you have to be clinical in taking the chances to score - shows the gulf between Prem and Championship.

Compare last night to Macclesfield last season; a team of squad members who have never played together before. Took a bit of time to find their feet, but in the end they were comfortable winners. Shows how much stronger our squad is than a season ago.

We might have lost out in the first 2 league games, even though I didn't think we played badly in either, but the last 2 games have shown we have nothing to fear this season. We should be looking upwards in the league, not down. Yes, the extra cup games will put some pressure on the squad, but shouldn't pro players dream of playing plenty of minutes. COYP
 
Like others I thought it was such a strange game which could easily have been lost by half time if Boro were sharper. We could have easily lost our last two matches and yet we scored 6 goals against the run of play and won them both? Difficult criticising our team when we have won the last two matches so perhaps I shouldn’t 🙂 We definitely require Richard’s and Canvot back in the back 3 for Ipswich as they won’t waste or not make chances like Boro and Fulham. Still don’t like how we are set up to press opponents leaving the defence under pressure as we are so careless with the ball up front losing it often with bad passes and then our middle 3 are pulled all over the place. In saying that we defended better last night as a team but gave the ball away easily too often. Pino was a main culprit and Wharton unusually again when he appeared did the same. These are quality players and need to be more consistent, so let’s hope they stop giving it away often and we get less pressure on our middle 3 with our wingbacks left upfield. I did enjoy a home win though 🙂

Trust the people who went. 3-0 home win, the journos just sort the report into the 'easy home win category'.

Broadly they overrun us in the midfield. And we struggled to play out from the back, often making multiple mistakes one after each other. We scored slightly against the run of play

But yes definitely some positives.

JSL held the ball up better. And its crystal clear that if we stick crosses in he'll score. Lets hope we continue to do this.

Mingueza isn't buccaneering, but is v solid.

I think all the Kamada haters have been silenced. That might be one of the best finishes I've seen.

It was a great goal, including the little look over his shoulder to check the defender's position. Nice ball from JSL too.
 
It was basically Middlesborough's reserve team, only 3 of them played at the weekend in the League. They looked sharp and keen to impress, lacked the final ball, but they ran rings around us in midfield. Without Disasi in the centre of defence, we would of struggled.

High level football is athletes performing to their optimum.

Anyone who does any physical activity understands the benefit of proper rest and recovery.

And full effective recovery will vary from player to player.

Desire and mindset are as you suggest critical elements but there is only so much a body can physically do.

Thank goodness for a deeper squad.
