Crystal Palace vs. Hoffenheim match thread

Outrageously frustrating. Not too bad going forward and looking better with JP in the side, which makes it even more frustrating that he is out for 3 games in the prem. we didn’t look like scoring however and it feels like there is too much focus on little flicks and moments, and not enough focus on just smacking it in the area and getting it in the bloody onion bag.

The defence. Christ above it’s looking torrid. Different 3 defenders every game without fail and they look like stranger. Ahonor is young, and it shows. Looked lost out there today and Mitchel saved him several times. Canvot looses focus and Richard’s hasn’t got the pace to make up for their mistakes a lot of the time. We just look shakey and suspect, every time we are on the back foot. Not sure what happened with Axel tonight but Sage clearly needs to his back 3 and stick with it where possible. Blokes can’t defend. Khalali was shite tonight. Constantly loosing the ball and making us look foolish for selling Monoz

Desperately unlucky. Ref was a complete bell piece and just downright awful. Injustices and dives all over the shop he was turning a blind eye to and giving out a red for that…. Shocking.

But sage. I’m loosing hope now to be honest after really wanting to stick with him. I just think he’s running out of ideas and more importantly out of time. Liverpools a write off but he needs a result soon as possible after that. I just think the team has too many gaps to be honest. Defence being the main issue as it’s been decimated

I’ve fully vented here so I apologise but needed to moan at someone
Spot on, on all counts.

I would add that I prefer Mingueza at RWB but I felt Sage wants Khalaili pushing forward and leaving gaps like he was for their goal.

Sage is gone. It either happens tomorrow or after we get smashed by Liverpool. It’s not if, it’s when!

s*** manager aside, the team need a good f***ing shake. It’s devastating to watch a team of gutless mercenaries less than 2 years after we had a team of warriors throwing bodies on the line in cup finals. Khalali and Canvot are the worst of a very bad bunch.

Sage sacking will get the headlines but everyone with half a brain can see Hobbs and parish are responsible for the unbelievably shite recruitment.

Either we make very serious changes and quickly or we will be facing the same outcome as West Ham, wolves and, even more likely, Leicester .

Fed up with all the negativity on here we actually played well tonight and but for a mistake by deano and the worst ref ive ever seen we would have won, still some defensive frailties but we will only improve fingers crossed but im always a glass half full kind of guy lol
I think you have a different take than the rest of us on the phrase “played well”.

As an aside, I don't get this high admiration for Kamada and Pino, whether tonight or generally.

Don't get me wrong, both are in our best XI at the moment. Kamada is neat and tidy, and Pino is busy. Both deserve credit for plugging away and getting better, but I think that's maybe part of the issue. They were both so bad in their first year that perhaps reasonable performances have come to appear good ones.

As match winners, how effective are they? They have no pace or physicality. They have poor records in terms of goals and assists. Even Kamadas goal tonight was scrappy and lucky really. He missed the target with a great chance in the first half, just like Pino hit the keeper with a great 1v1 opportunity. None of that is uncommon.

We will have a new manager soon. He will surely set to work organising us defensively, then try to embed a pattern of play to get us up to the final third in some sort of controlled manner. The thing he will find harder to organise is the creation and scoring of goals. That's where individual ability counts. I don't think I would like to rely on Pino and Kamada for that.

My very first question would be 'When is Sarr fit?' and my first requirement would be that Mateta not be sold in January.

Pino and Kamada are decent support acts, but absolutely not star men.

optimism is one thing but you must be literally watching a different game.

Home game. Pretty average Europa appointment. We were headless chickens.

We had very little threat, defensively clueless and half arsed in almost everything. Refs in Europe are largely the same with very low tolerance in open play and we acted like this is a surprise.

Appreciate the optimistic outlook but surely a dose of reality is needed after tonight?

On the train speeding back to the W Midlands. Had to leave the game a few minutes early to ensure I got this, and yes, I missed our goal.

Only left a gane early once before over 60 years ago, and guess what, yes missed our last minute equaluzer on that occasion as well.

Tonight's game. My take on it is:
1. Players focusing on quick one touch football but without the accuracy required for it to work resulting in multiple turnovers and dangerous counter-attacks by the oppo.
2.Players not comfortable with what they are being asked to do.
3. Defence lacks cohesion and seem to have been told to play it out front the back whatever the pressure resulting in panic passes to the oppo and more danger.
4. We did play some very nice football in patches but invariably messed it up with sloppy passing just when we were looking dangerous.
5. Sageball isn't going to work with this group of players.

I suspect he will be gone soon.

A realistic and fair assessment in my view.
A front 3 of Pino, Kamada and Larsen is unlikely to keep us in the division.
There is not enough pace, power, physicality there to trouble the sort of defenders we encounter in the Premier League.
Sarr is the only one with pace and doesn't seem want to play for us.
We look like facing a Guehi type situation with Mateta in January and I can't see Parish foregoing the chance to cash in.
As you say, both Pino and Kamada are decent but they cannot do a Bolassie or Zaha, or Eze and Olise and consistently hurt teams un the final third.
It's not their game.

It’s an interesting point but I think the clear difference between Sarr/Mateta and Yeremy/Kamada is the latter want to play for us.

At his best Sarr is the pick of that group but it’s November and for whatever reason he hasn’t turned up for pre-season yet. Mateta definitely had his moments the past two years but this season he has one goal in six games and a red card/3 game suspension? Honestly, Kamada and Yeremy have been far better.

A point turned out to be a decent result.

Main worry is we are too easy to play against. If you turn the ball over when we are attacking just play the ball forward and wide quickly...

... Mitchell doesn't look comfortable and Khalaili not up to it I'm afraid.

Wharton red card very soft and especially unfortunate as Sage had just subbed McNeil for Ahanor.

McNeils persistence had a hand in our goal... I do think the squad has enough quality to be higher than our current lowly position, but I don't think Sage is the manager for us...

I understand what your saying but, as I'm sure you appreciate, I'd really want to play for Palace. Doesn't make me good enough!

Neither Sarr or Mateta have got going properly this season yet, but that doesn't make Kamada and Pino regular premier league match winners.
