Crystal Palace vs. AEK Larnaka match thread

f***ing hell we've missed some chances
And this is the crux of it. The number of gilt edged chances going missing is truly shocking. Mateta bundling in a goal for France, hitting a hat trick and then missing a absolute sitter sums him up perfectly. Unless the percentages improve, and the midfield starts to chime in with a few goals, we'll not go much further in Europe nor progress in the Prem either.
I thought for this game Glasner could have started with Mateta and Nketiah and gone two up front, but he doesn't have a plan B. Too much of our play relies on Mateta being the focal hold-up man, and Pino has yet to provide the alternate outlet that Eze offered.
Perhaps Glasner underestimated the opposition.

A true 'Shock' and a shocking result a team who would struggle in the Championship.
We had 15 shots but only 1 on target.
There are those who were critical of Canvot but he is only 19 and vastly inexperienced having only played 18 games for Toulouse in the French League. He attempted to be progressive with his passing but it is patently obvious that he is not PL ready.
Apropos Pino, he has impressed me in flashes with his quick feet but overall I have not been overly enamoured by his contributions. Last night he was conspicuous for his fouling and precious little else.
Mateta is missing too many chances but I suppose a positive is that he is getting the opportunities.
We struggle to break down teams who sit in a 'Low block', more of that to come in the Conference League.
A dire night and I was boiling, steaming and raging, tonsils leaving their moorings.I am not best pleased as I type. 😡 😡 😡

Shout out to Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar for beating Polish champions Lech Poznan 2-1. Been a night of shocks.

That one is a much bigger shock than our result.
That's the one that people following the tournament will be talking about this morning.
Thank Goodness for the Imps.

Mateta hit a hat-trick on Saturday, 1 was a penalty and 2 tap-ins.The chances he misses is a real concern.
Apropos our midfield, there are no goals in there, Wharton needs to improve this area of his game to take him to the next level and Pino never came to us as a goalscoring midfielder.
The stark reality is that we are no better than last season and will in all probability finish in about the same place as in the last campaign without another trophy in the cabinet.

It was the worst of all worlds last night - a strong team selected that still didn’t get the job done, didn’t play well and added to that we didn’t really learn anything.

I was watching from the side of the pitch that Pino was attacking in the first half, and from where Canvot made his error in the second half.
Nothing went right for Pino, the ball was bouncing off his shins, he was often outmuscled and moves broke down around him.
He is obviously much better than that, but we have to find the best way to utilise him.
At the moment he often receives the ball with his back to goal in congested areas and he doesn’t seem to be on the same wavelength as his teammates.
Early days, but I expect his improvement to be gradual rather than dramatic.

Canvot played his pass across the pitch blindly in a defensive area, a cardinal mistake for any defender.
Anyone can make a mistake so it would be unfair to judge him on this alone.
Nonetheless, he was also caught out of position a couple of times in the first half where he could have been punished at Premier League level.
I think it will take time for him to contribute regularly.

We ended up with lots of attacking players on the field but still seemed to lack genuine width and pace down the sides to open up the opposition.
The crosses we managed to make all evening were particularly disappointing- too close to the keeper or too deep and running aimlessly out of play.

I partly agree with those who say it was just one of those games while at the same time acknowledging that we do struggle against teams who sit deep.

Canvot came to us on the back of a mere 18 games for Toulouse so is vastly inexperienced.
He will get experience playing in the PL but the issue is he is not ready as yet to play at that level so his game time is limited.
This is the conundrum of purchasing 'Potential' players, they need game time but do not get this opportunity as they are not PL ready. If we were in the Championship this would be less of an issue.

Trouble being that one mistake (there were others by Canvot) cost us last night. I would have taken 0:0 this morning without that mistake after our poor performance last night. Would rather he was loaned out to get experience? That dads army banner beforehand is rather embarrassing now :-(

I understand that there are those who might conclude that players such as Canvot and Esse might benefit from a loan, however whilst they are at other clubs they are not drilled in the Glasner way. He does like to work with his players to educate them in the manner in which he wants his team to play.

Horrible, niggly, wasting time, feigning injury, cheating…..and that’s just the people I sit with 🤣

But seriously we’ve got to learn about European football pretty quick if that’s how it is, what a s*** team AEK were, BUT it’s up to us to break them down and we were poor last night, they definitely did a job on us.

I’ve waited 50 years for this s*** 🤣🤣

Its obvious we are breaking down teams and creating chances ,its also obvious where the problem lies .

The lads need shooting practice

Just when you start thinking we are getting ahead of the game, a result comes along that reinforces our fragility at the top level.

Despite our overall season on season improvement you have to admit this was a typical Palace performance, more particularly when an entirely different outcome was anticipated and more to the point, expected.

Much earlier in the thread I spoke about our midfielders. Our central midfielders don't score due to the system as much as anything else. They're not going to get anything other than long shots as they cannot get into the area due to being two holding midfielders. Hence we see the odd speculative long shot go nowhere. It's a symptom of the two holding central midfielders system.

As far as I can see, the last Palace player to go out on loan and then come back and have a successful career was John Salako, who’s not too far off drawing his pension.

Something is wrong with the way we manage our loanees.

On reflection…

First of all, the young kid. It was a mistake, let’s not crush the kid. We all learn far more from our mistakes than our successes. MG is leaving at the end if the season at the latest, giving this kid and Riad when’s fit time is a must where we can as we are not likely going out and getting a £50 million centre back any time soon to replace him.

It was a bad night no question. But that is also part of the learning curve. We will all have to get used to these tactics against us, I’m talking about the diving like they’ve been shot, time wadying keepers etc etc and least we forget we won an FA cup by doing exactly that. That said… my god they were at it big time last night.

Here’s the thing, we did everything except put the ball in the net. Tactically we did get through them. Wright and Bright come away from our last few games each with a hat trick each.

The biggest and most worrying problem we have is our strikers missing sitters and I do mean sitters and the complete lack of goals from the midfield (we must have the least amount of goals from midfield in any league?)

Our defence cannot be expected to keep a clean sheet every game. The strikers need to sort themselves out along with the midfielders.

I think it just reinforces that we have good starting 11, outside of that there is precious little else. So we either play the first 11 into the ground every game or accept these resuits with the squad players. Chelsea won the competition playing effectively the youth team, we dont have that luxery.

Glasner has european experience so he knew what the game would be like.

I agree. Watching on TV last night I laughed at the audacity of the HF.

I'm not laughing now.

A dire performance with Canvot the pantomime villain and I'm sorry to say that JP plays like the court jester. To my mind he looks like the player who first joined us when I thought that Edouard was the better of the two. To describe him as a striker is a misnomer.

We can only hope that, as others have written, that last night acts as a wake up call.

If he was loaned we have zero cover at centre half. It was a bad error no doubt but then in his previous appearance he looked good and composed. This is a bit of what you get with young and inexperienced players.

Everyone was bad last night with the exception of Wharton when he came on. Pino was dreadful. He needs time but has been ineffective as a Palace player so far. JPM looked off it and continued his trend of missing sitters. Guehi and Lacroix didn’t distribute well plus Lacroix also missed a sitter. Hughes and Lerma didn’t play a good pass between them. Wrong selection in midfield to have two defensive players. Nketiah was a headless chicken when he came on and missed two good chances.

All in all a very bad night and some worrying trends creeping in, especially around finishing and defensive errors.
