Brighton - Tactics required

Yawn.
Brighton have hammered most teams they’ve played so far this season.
How managers of opposing teams have been sacked thus far.
Must have missed Arteta getting the boot !
What I was attempting to convey is that there are those who are questioning the suitability of Pierre Sage for the role at our club, and an abject defeat will only serve to strengthen their viewpoint on this matter.
Hopefully we attain a positive result and perhaps some might reconsider their opinions.

Brighton have been free-scoring and impressive this season.
A continuation of our recent performances will I suspect result in a comprehensive defeat and further questions raised as to appointment of Pierre Sage.
How often have we turned the form book on its head . Brighton have outplayed us in many a match and we still won . Its our biggest rivals , form doesnt count most of the time

I don't think people are suggesting that Sage could lose his job just because of a single heavy defeat by Brighton.
It would be more a case of a seeming inability to stem to incessant flow of goals conceded and an apparent lack of a plan to prevent said concession.

People have justifiably identified our better attacking and more fluid play under Sage, but there's little point in this if it's at the expense of our defensive capability.
There has to be a better balance and if Sage can't achieve this then it doesn't make one a miserabilist to point this out and suggest there can only be one conclusion.
You accurately laid out the two contesting arguments going on about Sage. ( absent the far less salient arguments being made about 'team spirit' and 'leadership' and 'being a quiet team' that frankly don't matter if the system is working from front-to-back ) You are right in saying if we cannot fix the defensive lapses then it is inevitable that either Sage must go or his system must change.

But I still can't see why a five-at-the-back system means we suddenly cannot defend a cross or a set piece. Yes, we are trying to move through the thirds faster so we are taking positional and passing risks that Glasner never had us taking. That has led to turnovers or lapses like the first goal against Forest. If they were the only type of goals we were conceding then a conversation at board level needs to happen about about major changes.

But most of our conceded goals are not happening because the system is being poorly executed and leaving us exposed and conceding goals. Slow build-up oppositional attacks, simple set pieces and corners are leading to crosses into our box that we are failing to clear or even failing to mark against. That is a problem with basic defending! Fail to fix that and no system or team can be successful.

I defend the system because it is getting goals out of JSL, Nketiah, Kamada, Pino and others, making us vastly less reliable on our two wayward attacking stars in Mateta and Sarr, who we have barely missed in terms of goalscoring stats. The new system makes us a far more fluid and less predictable attacking unit and harder to counter. Yes, we cede possession a lot but we did that under Glasner and his regimented system that was easier to defend against. The difference was we did basic defending better under Glasner, maybe because we had a settled back line of excellent CBs.

I think we need Lerma at the back, playing with Richards and Canvot -a settled back line. If Tomiyasu is ever able to be consistently fit or Disasi can prove he can be relied upon, then we can tinker but we need a back three who play together as often as possible and we need to maximise defending crosses in training, assuming we aren't already. And we need to pay whatever it takes to secure a fast CB who can also dominate in the air. If it costs £50M, so be it.

Fix the defence and this team and system can go places. Best of all, it doesn't require exceptional talents like an Eze, Olise or Zaha to make it work. It only needs accurate passing and intelligent, willing runners. I think it's how a club like us, unable to pay enough to get the next Cherki, Tzolis or Dembele, can still keep going forward.

The two arguments are really one and the same reason. We look more attacking because we have 6 or 7 players pressing up the pitch. We look shambolic defensively because we have 6 or 7 players up the pitch leaving the defense exposed.

Sage needs to balance it. We’ve had a very benign set of opening fixtures and have conceded the second most goals in the League. We have 7 points and 3 defeats in 6. Not absolutely catastrophic but not great considering the fixtures.

Keep on being so open as we play better teams and we will struggle. Just tweak the tactics to provide more cover. We saw it work against Leeds

Sadly I agree with you. Every game this season other than Leeds we have looked like we will concede a hatful of goals. In my opinion we will lose by a lot today. I have no faith in our setup :-( Yes, we might score a couple but those players going forward won’t get back in time to support our back three whoever they may be this time around. I just hope I’m wrong but after today Sage may be looking for a job?
I rest my case, other than scoring a couple we let in the predicted hatful :-(
