Back three next season?

Yes, I know this will depend on who the new manager is. I know also that some people find our rigidly sticking to this formation very annoying, especially when key components are missing. But…

I think our current back three work so well together that I have come to like the system. I love the way they cover for each other almost automatically when one is drawn out of position.

I wonder how well it would work if we played with a flat back four? After watching Palace playing with a back four for many years, it now feels almost alien.

Does anyone else feel the same?

I remember Glasner saying he tried a back 4 and the players found it hard?

Going into the new season and say we are in Europe again we need to get points on the board in the league early on and not be trying to adapt to a new system.

That would entail getting a new manager in early and having a pre season with the players for the back 4....or getting a manager who plays the back 3 in?

As we know with palace we probably get a back four playing manager a day the new season starts etc....

The advantage Palace have playing the back 3 is that every other team whether they are at the top or the bottom think there is decent chance of beating us so push forward to some extent leaving spaces for us break into when we win possession.

The formation does not look anywhere near as effective against the low block we've come across in the Conference. Even teams that would appear to be average and from a relatively poor league seem to restrict our chances with ease.

I think the back three system best suits all the defenders at the club, with the possible exception of Mitchell, who may be better in a four. The extra cover has helped both Richards and la Croix develop, and it's now helping Canvot and Riad.

The issue is further forward. If you use three defenders and wingbacks then you almost certainly can't play with wide wingers as well. I think many of us are hoping Johnson will come to life if played wide right. Similar things have been said about Pino. Obviously that can't happen if we aren't using wingers.

Assuming no-one makes us an offer we can’t refuse for LaCroix, especially now he’s got into the French squad, I’ll be happy with him and any two🤣 because he’s immense, by far our best player this season, I haven’t seen a CB with his pace since Billy Gilbert
