Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has proposed a change to the offside rule that would mean attackers are onside if any part of their body is in line with the last outfield defender.

Mateta thinks it is 'fantastique'.....

😎

This has been going round for years.

It won't change anything. The problem isn't what counts as offside. The problem is the time it takes them to make a decision. The boys with their toys at Stockley Park will still take an age to draw out their lines and nitpick. It's just changing where the line will be drawn.

Agreed but it means 'daylight' which I think offside should be and clarity.

I am hopeful handball will return to being deliberate one day as well.

I believe that it was erstwhile referee Keith Hackett who opined that handball should only be penalized if a player deliberately uses his/her hand to make contact with the ball.
One supposes there will still be controversy in certain circumstances due to interpretation of 'Deliberate' !
I have heard the arguments "Hand to ball" not "Ball to hand" etc etc.

Although even if not deliberate it can still be handball if it stops a shot going to goal or a pass to another player. It is again subjective on the impact it would have on the particular phase of play.

I have been involved in conversations whereby some have opined that 'Handball' should only be penalized if a player deliberately moves his/her hand towards the ball. "Ball to hand" and all that.
I countered that under this ruling a player could extend his/her hand out wide when defending a cross or in front of goal, the ball hits the hand and this will not be deemed 'Handball' as the hand was not moved towards the ball.
