Are we bang in trouble?

All this talk of OG leaving is catastrophising. Do you not think he'd be well aware of the situation? Of course he would. He probably talks with Steve multiple times a week, if not every day. I would say that literally weeks ago, he would've accepted that we can't let Guehi walk on a free, so we'll probably have to sell him this season. He'll have the insider scoop weeks in advance that none of us do. So if he hasn't already walked, he won't now.

Calm down.

Dont worry we still have Edouard .
Let's not forget, most of us had written off Mateta as useless in his initial period with us.
Now we've done the same with Eduoard. But don't understimate Glasner's ability to turn a piece of concrete into a gem. Eduoard may surprise us if he's given a run of games...it's all about confidence.

Probably not...but maybe.

I genuinely think we’ll be alright and I have rarely thought that in the past 35 years. It’s like when we conceded a penalty in the cup final, I’ve never had more faith in our keeper saving it, then he did. This is a very good team.

No player is irreplaceable. They all get old and slow and need moving on. We have no control over MG leaving. If he chooses not to sign we have to sell him now so we can afford a replacement. EE has a release clause that I think expires on Friday. If that us met, we cannot do anything about it. It would be nice to keep both for another year, like it would have been nice to have kept MO. We do not have deep pockets or a fancy history so have to live within our means. Best year in 40 supporting them. Good to watch and win more than they lose. Happy to continue our steady progression. Hopefully we can keep OG, win the Conference and qualify for the Europa League. Sheffield Wednesday could have been us (2010 2-2).

Can somebody please explain why and how we have no money for transfers? Seriously. We have been in the top flight over a decade now… where’s the loot gone. I know SP likes a suit but f*** me how are we skint?

Agreed on all points!

We have had players in the past where I've felt "if only he could do X a little bit better...".

If only Zaha's attitude was a little bit less self-centred...
If only Bolassie was more consistent...
If only Cameron Jerome put away more of his (some of his?) chances...

I have come to see this as an illusion. If they could have done whatever X was, they'd have beeen playing in the Champions League every year half the time.

In this team I am seeing players who really *can* do X better. They are doing their talking on the pitch and we are keeping hold of them! Sarr, Wharton, Guehi, Lacroix, Eze, Mateta and Henderson all come to mind. So we are in a great place and I hope it keeps on that way.

according to Textor, he also likes a shiny car.
I'm not clear why we couldn't borrow some money if needed - you would have thought Johnson, Harris and Blitzer would be a safe bet - and repay when we made some sales. We likely have lost out on some of our top targets this window

I would like that explained too.
A few years ago as a much less established Premier League club we spent £25 million plus on both Benteke and Sakho and managed to buy Cabaye with all their expensive wages too.
These were all top players with pedigree and those fees for Benteke and Sakho would probably equate to £35 million in today’s market.

If the answer is that it was an injection of investment from the owners, but still met the spending rules, why is that not possible now?
Is it that they don’t want to make that investment?

At one point there was supposed to be a mysterious £100 million ring fenced for a new stand.
Is that still the case , even if the cost of building it has gone up drastically.

I’m not suggesting malfeasance or even necessarily being critical of the club.
We’ve seen how clubs like Brentford,Bournemouth , Wolves and Brighton have been selling off assets in the summer without spending.

I’m just to trying to get a handle how we now appear to be less competitive in buying players now than we were when we were able to attract Benteke, Sakho and Cabaye.
Even if one accepts that our buying model has changed , at least we had the funds to make the purchases .

But unless they can guarantee him enough game time to satisfy his England World Cup hopes then he's unlikely to be signing this Summer.

However, if Liverpool think they really need him this Summer then they should:
a) give him those assurances and (more importantly for us)
b) stop trying to lowball us and pay what we want and get it done quick.

Otherwise they should look elsewhere
We shouldn't under estimate that this tight knit, cohesive group of players and coaching team will want to stay together and really have a go at getting more success this season. They've already proven that they are more than capable by beating city and Liverpool among others.

Not attempting to offer a full explanation for that but what we have from Sunday from Parish includes ‘We have got a lot of outgoings this year because we are paying a lot of transfer fees for players that we have already got... If you see the fees, they are just nuts. The money we are paying, crazy. We will have to see.’

We can only guess what and who those past fees are related to - clauses on appearances, goals, winning the cup, Europe? Yes we afforded established players before but they aged fairly quickly and we got less selling them. Perhaps the model that has got us this excellent youngish squad is still costing us?

Harris and Blitzer loaned the club money back in the twenty teens to meet real needs - i.e. the need to survive relegation. I believe that money was repaid out of the AWB sale.

H & B are first and foremost investors who are looking for a decent return of their investments - they're no sugar daddies.

We do not currently have a need - we have lots of "would likes" and "would be nice to haves" but we don't have a desperate need. We've a good enough squad to end in our traditional spot somewhere between 10th and 15th.

The ECL will provide opportunities for fringe players and those from the Academy training with the first team. We can hope that one or more of Cardines, Jemide, Rodney and Mustapha (when back from injury) will do a Devenny this season and become serious members of the 1st team squad by the season's end. I expect Esse will indeed prove to have done so well before the end of the season.

Great post, but, that word & its real, think you have out 'Willo'd' Willo.

The amount of panic and unreasonably pessimistic expectations here is, whilst unsurprising, still disappointing. We have only just had our appeal rejected. Clubs and agents were waiting for that and are now making noise about our prized assets. Often to placate their own fans.

We have a club and a Chaiman who believe in ethical behaviour. We have a group of players who clearly do too. Led by a manager who believes in them. Everyone seems to genuinely respect what the others are doing. You don’t walk away from that lightly.

We would have prepared for this scenario. Glasner will have been involved and knows what’s likely to happen. We don’t. I don’t know any better than anyone else but it would not surprise me to see Marc sign a new contract with a buy out and for Ebs to also stay, with maybe just a couple of loans incoming to help us with the greater number of games.

Indeed - a pretty well balanced thought. I suspect, however, that Marc may leave but sometimes players like to see a project through and see how far they can get. I think Marc perhaps owes us 1 more season and a new contract with a sensible release clause. My biggest concern is that Glasner was a bit miffed at a second season of late transfers and it occurs to me that if we do lose a couple, he then has to blood new players in quickly. His contract is arguably more important than Marc’s.
All told I would be amazed if we had not planned for just this very eventuality.’

Good post. Although I don’t see Marc signing a new contract. Delighted if he does

We’re on an upward trend as a club and have the best team we’ve ever had. To improve or add to this squad will take big money and unlike the fat Greek in Nottingham Parish isn’t going to break SPR rules to do so. Therefore we will only buy big if we sell Guehi and/or Eze, and we have no control over this at present. Either or both could leave this week or both might choose to stay given the importance of internationals this season. Hopefully we have targets in mind to replace both should they go and if as suggested we’re negotiating with teams over sales, we’re also negotiating over replacements so there’s no delay.

We have a little more control once Eze’s release clause is over next week.
Ollie’s last interview on the subject indicated he is on board and while frustrated understands the situation. My guess is that Eze will stay because neither Arses or Spuds are prepared to pay £68 million and we will shut up shop. Guehi will go if Liverpool stump up somewhere closer to £40 million and give him the guarantee he wants regarding starting games. There’s a fair chance that won’t happen and both will stay until January at least and we might bring in a couple of loans to fill the squad.

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, we have the 10th highest net spend over the last 5 years (albeit this includes clubs that have not been in the PL that whole time).

I don't really understand PSR, but on average that has us losing around £30 million a season on fees, plus you then have to factor in the other costs like wages and bonuses.

I must admit to being a bit worried but also can understand that there is currently no Freedman replacement and Parish has been distracted by having to invest so much time in the UEFA issue.

There is also the point that we have Riad, Doucoure, Nketiah and Franca injured. By October or November at least a couple of them should be able to play a part. A fit Doucoure will make a big positive difference and I think Nketiah could still be very good for us. Riad and Franca I am not sure about.

I think it's with the injured players in mind that Glasner has said he needs two players. Obviously if Eze and/or Guehi go then we need to replace them also. However, can see Davenny having a larger role this season (think potentially he is excellent).

But what would help is to be 'thrown a freakin bone'. Some sort of news that we are in talks with x player or have a agreed a fee. At the moment there is nothing but Guehi to Liverpool and Eze potentially to Arsenal or Spurs. They also really need to replace Freedman though I guess that will not happen until after the transfer window shuts.
