Anyone thinking we are playing too many games?

Part of OG's presser taken from the bbc about the Leeds game . . .

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner on having to play three matches in six days in December, after their Carabao Cup quarter-final against Arsenal was rearranged for 23 December: "We are trying the same thing that Arsenal are trying, to move our Leeds game [currently scheduled for Sunday 21 December] forward to Saturday [20 December], so we don't have two days between these games. Let's see.

"We didn't get a response until now from the Premier League, just to have the same as Arsenal, if their game is moved.

"I am always talking about making mistakes being part of development. I think that the EFL and the Premier League didn't solve this problem before the start of the season - they will learn from it and I am pretty sure that next year they will have the solution before the start of the season.

"Maybe they needed this experience to solve it, not to rely that it won't happen.

"Again, we will be ready, whatever the fixture is, but it is so far away, we have so many games until 23 December that at the moment I don't care."

"I rely on the club, that they get the Leeds game moved to the Saturday and then let's see."

I still think back to when Parish uttered his famous, “what if the sun doesn’t come up” statement shortly before losing our only striker to injury.

As good as we are with our small squad, we already have Nketiah injured and Mateta gets tired at about 70 minutes. So if we are not trusting Uche that means Sarr has to go CF and if we lose Mateta and Sarr for a few weeks to injury it would be pretty disastrous.

Does playing more games directly relate to more injuries, I’m not sure but it certainly can’t help.
In today's presser, Glasner suggested that injuries tend to happen to those who don't play regularly (in our current case Nketiah and Cardines) and that those who have played (virtually) every game are the fit ones who are in the rhythm and less likely to get injured. Yes, he will rest those who he believes NEED a rest but he's not going to rotate for the sake of it.

Who knows when an injury is going to strike. Whilst match fitness is a recognised thing, (look at Mitchell, Mateta and Guehi who rarely miss anything), the body is more likely to break down when it’s running on empty ie when you are tired.

You say rotate for the sake of it, but surely this is exactly what the top teams do to maintain fresh legs in the starting 11. It might only be a couple of players at a time so the core team is kept the same, but they still do it.

Yes, but look at how many injuries they get.

On the question of running on empty, Glasner was careful to stress how much he and his team plus the physios etc. keep tabs on each player's fitness levels etc.

Seems the 'Poch' & OG have had a spat over Richards & managing his minutes . . .

Personally, I'm loving watching the boys go in 2-0 up at halftime against Alkmaar and I don't think we're playing enough games. The more the better for me. A joy to watch.

That may be the case. What I saw last night was a very knackered after 60 mins Munoz and Mateta. It really would have been better for us Sunday if they went of earlier and a couple of others got some game time? I think Glasner keeping such a small squad and more so not changing until very late in a game will hurt us over a very long season? We shall see what last night does to the two players I mentioned this Sunday? I hope I’m wrong and we beat (perhaps draw) with the seaweed 🙂

An odd comment.. is OG Saying that if we didn't have so many mid week games so only played (every) weekend, that's not enough for the players to keep fit and stay in rhythm?

You would also hope that for the busy periods where we play 4 games in 8 days or whatever, training for the 'chosen few' who are to play the majority of minutes would be kept to technical stuff, and not involve too much physical exertion.

No, he's not saying that. Rather it's about players "staying in the rhythm" as he calls it. Hence he wanted both Wharton and Kamada on yesterday for 30 minutes or so, so as to be ready for Sunday.

He doesn't want his players doing sprints between games either as they'll get plenty of opportunities for those in games. As he keeps saying, training currently is about focussing on the one or two things that might make a difference when playing the next opponent and such sessions are very short because the players are already fit and don't need the more intense training that only playing once a week would require.

BTW given the decision to play the Arsenal game on 23rd December we won't have to play 4 games in 8 days.
