Why is it so offensive to say ‘all lives matter’?

I understand the argument but, on balance, I disagree with it.

I think that using “All lives matter” avoids accusations of racism rather than increases them. So long as when using the phrase what else you say ensures that.

Indeed. Anyone who has read about the years after WW1 will know just have strong support for the communists were and how close they came to taking power. Many of those that supported them then switched to the Nazis when they realised they had a better chance of power. 2 sides of the same coin.
