AFCON Final

Detractors to this competition are told to respect this event - big continent etc. This only serves to diminish its credibility. If there's a rule in place that says walk offs equal forfeiture then fine, but it didn't. Actually on reflection it might not be a bad rule to consider. But the retrospective imposition plays into the narrative of Morocco were destined to win.

Absolutely ridiculous.

I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't the end of AFCON.

I can see Senegal and others boycotting it in future and who could blame them.

I think we can respect the teams, players, fans, and the passion and carnival of the tournament.

It's just the African federation seems bent as f***.

UEFA would never have that problem ...Oh wait.

The game should have been awarded to Morocco when Senegal left the pitch.
The competition has always had a chaotic feel to it, players, fans, officials, tbe whole thing. what happened in the final took it 2 steps back.
It’s bizarre that in this day and age you still have witchcraft and juju as part of African football

But the referee restarted the game so that must equal permission?

Our domestic game is riddled with superstitions that are arguably more ridiculous.
  • Barry Fry: As manager of Birmingham City, he allegedly urinated on the four corners of St Andrew's stadium to break a 100-year-old curse
  • John Terry: Reportedly used the same shin pads for 10 years, parked in the same spot, and listened to the same CD.
  • Harry Kane: Prefers putting on all left-side gear first and has historically used "no-shave" streaks after scoring.
  • Aaron Ramsdale: Follows a strict right-side-first dressing routine and removes a glove to shake hands due to a family tradition.
  • Paul Ince: Consistently waited to be the last player out of the tunnel and put his shirt on while walking out.
  • Gary Lineker: Never took shots during warm-ups to avoid "wasting" goals, and changed shirts at halftime if he hadn't scored.
  • Phil Jones: Determined which sock to put on first based on whether they were home or away.

Kuwait stormed off the pitch in their World Cup 1982 game against France.

They came back on and were allowed to continue. No punishment then, although they did lose the game 4-1.

It's like this every time - I watch it for the entertainment value in how ridiculously rigged it all is. What teams in the Premier League should be thinking is not releasing players for such a fraud of a competition.
This is all for FIFA votes - nothing else.

It seemed to me that the referee and all concerned in the AF hierarchy wanted Morocco to win.
I think the Senegalese sensed a stitch up and acted accordingly. This farcical decision seems to back that up.
Walking off the field was a decision that deserves some punishment assuming all was fair, but reversing the result of a final is just plain bonkers, or simply corrupt.

Senegal won the game on the field and that is all that matters.

As Soon as the ref allowed the Match to carry on, then result should not be able to be overturned like this. Its make the call then, or not at all.
The Ref, chosen for the final(presumably as he was the best), should know the rules and be able to apply them.
Farcical.

That's the thing, it seems like the ref did know the rules and applied them correctly.

This 'forfeit for walking off' rule is something they made up subsequently.

I didn’t know they made up the rule after the event, although in the world that is AFCON nothing should be surprising. You can’t change the result months later. Football isn’t cycling!
