Adam Wharton

He’s a sensible lad with good people around him. He’d benefit massively from another full season playing every week in the premier league under a highly regarded coach (and so would we). His time for a move will come - but with plenty of time left on his contract we will be in no rush to let him go………unless an offer we can’t refuse is made.
 
I absolutely would take £100m for Wharton.
Anderson was being touted at around £120m and is a far better player.

Wharton needs to be playing in a better team without the defensive responsibilities to truly shine.

Both Anderson and Wharton have quality and I wouldn't say one is better than the other and though opinions might lean one way or the other 'far better' is just a nonsense.

Whartons obvious stand out attribute is seeing the pass , the accurate and perfectly weighted through ball to the attacker in space . You wont see anyone in the England side doing that on a regular basis if at all . He doesn't need to give up the defensive work to shine he just needs attackers that can find space .

And they are as rare as rocking horse poo whatever club he plays for

Respectfully disagree. Yes Glasner’s system didn’t fully encourage the CMs to get too far forward but they had chances throughout the season. When they did their finishing, Wharton very much included, wasn’t great. Positive signs towards the end though.
 
My main concerns with Wharton have always been his lack of mobility/speed and physicality.
There is no doubt that his range of passing and vision is beyond reproach, however I just don’t feel that we can get the best out of him with the system that we play and are likely to play if Sage does become the manager.

I honestly feel that we are holding him back and have said on a few occasions that I believe he will truly shine when playing with better players and a system that allows him time to play almost like a quarterback. Similarly to how I recall Yohan Cabaye playing.

The last point I would make is that £100m is a hell of a lot of money. When you consider we got nearly £70m for Eze and £50m for Olise (I know that they had release clauses which limited their potential value) it smashes our record sales fee and gives the club some much needed money to reinvest in the squad. (As long as we don’t waste it! Mention no names!!!)
 
A deep playmaker isn't likely to be a match winner very often, so Wharton can't reasonably be compared to Eze and Olise, but he is in their category insofar as he's just got 'it'.

I understand the argument for and against selling him to reinvest. For us, he manages to combine being no more than reasonably effective with displaying absolute solid gold quality and class. I love watching him play, but he's a bit like Guehi: an unnecessarily high class component in our particular machine. We could be no worse as a team with mobile, hard working, but lesser players in his place. His real gifts are more useful to the big boys than to us.

Guehi was always able to play 1v1 high up on the halfway line against even the best forwards, plus use the ball very well. We rarely needed him to do either. We needed him to defend deep in a compact unit, which is something a lesser player would be fairly capable of (hence Guehi not really being missed as much as Eze). It's Man City who need him to play 1v1 on the halfway line. His skills suit them more than us.

Thats the sense I get with Wharton. He could possibly move up and up the levels and still be comfortable, possibly more so as the test becomes more and more about awareness and technical ability. Can he use the ball flawlessly, quickly, 100 times a game? Can he find the perfect weight and angle of pass at the perfect time to release a top level forward on the one occasion it's possible to do so in the very biggest games? He probably could.

City (or whoever) need that, and it's rare as rocking horse s***. We like it, but rarely need it. We need our midfield to battle and run. Wharton seems such a good lad, he doesn't feel above putting a shift in every week, but a blind man on a galloping horse could see that he has that level of quality that usually lives at the top level.

Plus, we could buy another Larsen, Johnson, and Pino with that sort of money. Just imagine...

I agree with all of this.

Last season was woeful from a league perspective, though I'd still argue was more than worth it for the win in Europe. IMHO Wharton can do 'world class things' however that's better suited to a team with other world class players. We need the money, always, however I think FA/European Cups will not be the norm for us. If we are to improve as a team, we need players who consistently perform at a higher level than the team does now and you have to question how long a player who can cut it with the very best will stay and help Palace battle it out for a top-10 finish?

I love watching him play, and I'm beyond grateful for his coming to Palace, but his departure would not fill me with resntment nor pessimism. Like Olise/Eze, he came to us to make his mark, he has, and it now may be time for him to move on, the club to make a profit, and go again.

I think we forget - he's still quite young and still developing physically, it seems to me. Also, and respectively, I think your recall of Cabaye is faulty. He did ping the ball about but he got stuck in defensively all the time. Wharton needs to play regularly and a scrappy team like ours is not a bad place to learn your trade. Anderson playing in a relegation scrap all year has not done his prospects any harm...
