as a tourist, i stood atop the World Trade Centre in mid June - literally only ten weeks prior to the Planes hitting. Many of the staff who made me coffee and operated the 'elevator' will have died. My Manhatten hotel room was opposite a Fire Station. The lads working there seemed like a friendly bunch.

But then again the morning of 7/7 i was actually commuting on the London Tube. Suddenly the trains all stopped and my phone signal died. We all knew that something big had happened, but there was an eerie silence interspersed with a ton of police sirens.

Plus i once sunbathed on a lilo at the Hotel beach below. Again, it was a few years prior to the religious-looney with the AK47.

Terror atrocities are not just 'something on the telly that happens to other people' , like traffic accidents.....they are very real and always potentially very nearby.

I remember comming home from primary school and watching on the tv. I still remember that feeling of being stunned watching it.
 
I was sitting in my lorry in Balham doing a collection. Listening to Talksport in its early days ,all of a sudden news comes on that a small aircraft had crashed into The World Trade Centre.
Time went on and it became clearer what had actually occurred and on came Mike Parry, a butt of all jokes on talksport to broadcast for hours on the attack.
I remember what a fabulous bit of work he did that day, it was a masterclass in broadcasting.
R.I.P. all who died in this obscenity.

I was working on one of the higher floors in Canada Square, Canary Wharf. It was utter chaos and very frightening because the location I was in was essentially the UK equivalent of where these atrocities were happening in real time.

Some memories:

1. The elevators got shut down for "safety reasons".
2. The stair wells also got locked to stop a stampede as everyone rushed to leave simultaneously. So you were stuck with no way out.
3. The stairs were opend up floor by floor, 5 minutes at a time, from the bottom up. So if you were on the 30th floor you had to wait at least 30 x 5mins - two and a half hours - before stairs from your floor opened up and enabled you to descend.
4. The descent itself was carnage and stressful - needing to go underground by two floors just to go back to ground level where the building exit was.
5. There was genuine panic as reports (I am still not sure if this has any substance or not - maybe someone else can confirm or debunk) went around that there was an unsuccessful attempt to carry out a similar attack in London at the same time. This would likely have been Canary Wharf.
6. All the news sites online got overloaded and could not be accessed. BBC, Bloomberg, others I would have used routinely all down. I actually think the internet was down at one point. The lack of access to realtime information was extremely distressing.
7. When finally getting into the fresh air some three hours later, there was a swarm of very obnoxious reporters shoving dictaphones in your face and asking, then demanding, that "I tell my story". At least one of those got told where to go: it was not "on".

All in all a dreadful event and dreadful day. I was lucky enough to meet a 9/11 survivor many years afterwards; these individual encounters can bring a ray of light to even the darkest events.

I was sitting in the British Club at the BHC Islamabad we couldn’t quite believe what was happening, it certainly had a big effect on my life. Wife and 2 young children were evacuated from post, as were all wives and children.
Spent days trying to persuade ex-pats that it may be advisable to leave the country. In fact, Islamabad was incredibly safe, despite the media trying to make out otherwise
 
I've have been to Ground Zero, a very humbling place, you look up at skyscrapers, not as tall as the twin towers, but not far off, and imagine the massive plane hitting it, must be the most evil thing in peacetime, that is if we still are in peacetime, who knows.

I listened to Mike that day as well.
Millions saw the second one hit live.
