While basking in the glory of our magnificent FA Cup win, I notice that some outlets are reporting this is apparently our first major trophy in 164 years! This is the problem with the club claiming the heritage of the first Crystal Palace FC, our trophy drought seems longer than reality which makes it the more embarrassing. It's actually 119 years, which is a bit better!
I am a big fan of Steve Parish so him continuing to push the false history of the club being founded in 1861 is disappointing and cringe. By peddling a bogus backstory, the club undermines its integrity and the intelligence of its supporters.
Every neutral football historian, and importantly, the Football Association agree our club was formed in 1905. Peter Manning is not a football historian. I notice no comment from Palace's long-standing historian Ian King and the Rev Nigel Sands before he passed away.
Manning has provided no primary sources to prove that the CPFC that played its last recorded game in 1875 is the same club today. I have spent over two years researching the topic and nothing can be found to back this up. In fact each of Manning's claims have been debunked: The big Crystal Palace 1861 lie
The FA told The Times in April 2022: "Amongst those historians, the broad consensus is that there is not a clear, substantial and continuous link from the Crystal Palace club founded in 1861 to that founded in 1905. Therefore, we will continue to recognise both the 1861 and 1905 foundation dates of the clubs named Crystal Palace."
On its website, the Football Association says the Crystal Palace club present when the FA was formed on 26 October 1863 "has no connection with the present Premier League club."
Steve Parish once said that he is not the owner, but simply a custodian of the football club. I can't help feel an unease about a few millionaires in suits rewriting our history, desperately cashing in on merchandising and club memberships to naïve fans in the US on historical falsehood.
I understand that most Palace fans don't really care and are happy to go along with the narrative. The Crystal Palace Supporters Association are quite content to tow the club line and not upset their access to the club to discuss pies and handrails. Inflated egos occupying inflated roles springs to mind.
Some of us do care about our club's heritage (I mean I've got all of the Rev's books 😀). But if you really don't give a s*** either way, there is no need to reply to this thread but I'm sure some will anyway. 😀
