The bbc, again.

You said no one else ever says what I do!

It’s obviously untrue.

It will change, because the licence is being ignored by too many. Keeping commercial influence away from the BBC is almost as important as keeping out political influence. So advertising is a no no.

So no taxes and no adverts. We must pay though. All of us, whether you like it or not.
Advertising is a no no. So ITN, Channel 4 news, Sky and every other outlet, including newspapers and commercial radio stations, is subject to outside influence. Only the BBC is above this contamination.
Paranoid, much?

That's not true, it's from the bbc.
BBC lies.

Read the headline

Culture secretary rules out funding BBC from taxes

Now read the detail

"But there is no question in my mind that the licence fee is not only insufficient, it's raising insufficient money to support the BBC, but it also is deeply regressive.

"We've seen far too many women prosecuted over recent years for being unable to pay it, and it's a flat fee that means that poorer people pay proportionately more than anybody else.

"That doesn't help the BBC, it doesn't help the government, and it doesn't help people in this country, and so we make no apology for saying that we're considering all options, and we're thinking quite radically and creatively about how we future-proof our national broadcaster for many years to come."

She added: "In other countries in Europe, they find different ways of raising money.

"In France, for example, they have a levy on cinemas. I'm not committing to any of these things at this stage."

Err a levy isn’t that a tax?

At least she's clear about one point it will no longer be a flat rate tax but will be based on ability to pay. Despite the headline it's clear that they are looking at another tax that will be compulsory and will vary depending on your financial cirumstance. Its also clear that she think the current funding is not enough and should go up.

The BBC must be loving this. More money and ditch the Licence fee which is a pain for them to collect because people don't want to pay it.

I'd be interested to know (if anyone can or does) just how much all these worldwide listeners, who apparently rely so heavily on the beloved and well trusted BBC to bring them the unbiased truth of world events, contribute to it's running?

From the BBC site.

BBC World Service is funded by a Parliamentary grant-in-aid, administered by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British government. The FCO, in close consultation with World Service, is involved in the process of deciding which languages are broadcast , but editorial control of the programmes rests entirely with BBC.

So that means they contribute nothing - licence fee payers paying for the world with no return!

Meanwhile, OAP's lose their free licence for over 75's .

The return is it's soft influence on millions of people becoming convinced the UK is the perfect destination; all those medical specialists which make Bradford's healthcare the envy of the world.

Nothing!

That’s not the point though. Us maintaining a hard won but well respected reputation for truthful reporting is a vital asset in building trust. It brings in nothing directly but is hugely valuable.

Not in making us a desirable location but in business dealings, especially where trust in your partner is essential.

Yes, I always think that. When I'm negotiating to buy a car, I always assume the salesman is a great and honest guy if I've recently watched Question Time.

Business dealings with whom?
Are any trade deals dependent to any degree on their reporting? Who has this trust inculcated because of the BBC? China? Russia? America?

I believe there was a man in Zambia who bought a kayak because he was so impressed with the shipping forecast that he always listened to on his wind-up radio

Interesting. I heard it was a woman in Gambia who bought a cake because she was depressed with the weather forecast. If only there was an impeachable news source to confirm the story.

Trump is expanding immigrant deportations.

I loved the article the other on the beeb where an illegal immigrant ducking ICE complained to the BBC that they were being treated like criminals (err because you are) no push back from the BBC e.g. but aren't you in the country illegally?
