No Guehi or Wharton in England Squad

Before this thread gets consigned to history I didn't realise that Wharton had been left out of the final squad for the Euro U21s tournament starting today

Was a reason given? I know you have to be super careful about concussion or was there something else said about his omission?

Crystal Palace midfielder Wharton out of the U21 England Team as he continues to recover from the concussion suffered in the club’s FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.

He was picked but then withdrew presumably on medical advice. He's had a tough season 1 major injury and then concussion. The best thing for him is to rest and get fit for next season, hopefully he will play in the world cup.

I find it difficult to believe that concussion has prevented Wharton being included in the U21 squad as it is now 4 weeks after the cup final, however, IMHO it is fantastic news as the guy needs a rest and playing a tournament for 3 weeks or so during pre-season would potentially impact next season.

The guy is 20 and is still growing. A few weeks on the beach with his feet up is clearly the best option.

MG has a bruised eye socket - there were fears it was broken, but this was disproved after a scan/x-ray. So he'll be fine. Again a rest for him is probably the best option rather than play in 2 meaningless England games.

I thought he was up against J. Henderson.
It depends I suppose.

Anyway, I thought Eze had a good game last night. He provided the two get out of your seat moments and barely put a foot wrong.
Sarr scored, and Henderson did his best considering how badly England defended.

I predicted that they would lose, but I'm sure things will improve come the World Cup.

A fit Wharton wins that game for England last night (as does Guehi over those Chelsea frauds...). Our midfield was absolutely pathetic
I understand your sentiments, although I'm not sure both of them would have been enough to save England last night. It was a pathetic watch and I found myself cheering Sarr mostly.

What caught my eye in your post was your reference to OUR which I'm afraid I can only associate to Palace. England were definitely THEIR last night.

I was really chuffed when it pinged up on my phone he’d scored, just a shame it was against Hendo instead of picknose

It's obviously knocked him pretty bad, this is a quote from OG, a week after the final.

"He's not allowed to do physical exercises at the moment. He has to follow the concussion protocol. He can't remember the [FA Cup] final.

"That means it takes a little bit longer than the usual seven days. I talked to him today, and he's still sleeping two or three hours during the day, which is completely unusual for him. That means he needs time to recover.

I guess they're just taking extra precautions with him? I just hope it doesn't have any long term implications for him, maybe we'll see him next season with a Petr Cech style helmet!

Wharton is 21 years old. Last time he went away with England he came back injured for 3 months leading to an operation, didnt really play until last third of the season. They can keep on not picking him, no benefit to Palace at all.

One game was a World Cup qualifier.

Lets face it, for most of this squad it was last chance saloon, as well as an opportunity to see our no. 1 goalkeeper. The qualifier was not in danger, even with a poor England team. Most failed the test but i am glad to say that Eze and Hendo passed with flying colours. Others who will be in for the future will be Rice and Madueke. The likes of Guehi and Wharton are certainties for England for many years to come. Although Kane scored a tap in, I feel that he should no longer be the first name on the sheet. No-one knows where he is half the time, he gets bored and interferes with the midfield and defence. Just my opinion!

You're not the only one. Kane may score but his all round play is not good enough. His movement is poor. He looks to be lumbering around most of the time. He seems like a decent guy but someone needs to tell him to just be up front, in the box, not coming back to get the ball and then lose it anyway.
I was wondering if England should play 4-3-3 but with three tens? No number 9. I think it might suit the glut of tens we have. I'm not talking about Barcelona, passing it in. Three tens direct. That's actually my main issue with England - go direct. Watching them pass the ball out and across the back four gave me visions of Roy.

Dont disagree but there is often so little in midfield that he has to come back to try and get something going. Same way Rooney used to.

Interestingly, the penny seams to be dropping on Whartons ability. Almost every pundit on this list picks Wharton in the fist 11.

Doesn't surprise me. Palace look so dangerous when we get the ball into Eze and Sarr quickly, before a defence can set, and they can run at it and make runs beyond it. The most remarkable part of the Senegal game for me was how little England seemed to want to attack at pace. It was no surprise the goal came from a turnover when the defence wasn't set (a turnover enabled by Eze who's coached to find those turnovers at Palace). All of Senegal's goals came from an attack at pace.

Wharton is as good as anyone in the league at a) high turnovers, and b) getting out of a tight spot and drilling a pass into a forward so they can attack space. Amazes me that England don't seem to have anyone else that can do it. Even Rice is more of a dribbler than a passer in that respect.

Football has moved on. The idea that you're going to get chances against a top 50 team that has been allowed to all get back into their shape is fanciful. Either force turnovers and attack at pace, or you're relying on a set piece.

Indeed. I'd love to know the % of fast break/turnover goals in the prem. Bet its pretty high.

And 100% on Rice, its where England struggle with a midfield 3 of Rice, Bellingham and Gallagher. All athletic and physical, non of them are passers.
