The world snooker championship takes place over 17 days. Ronnie wasn't very impressive yesterday but still leads 5-4 and completes at 14:30hrs.

The talking heads put it down to him having a new ferrule on his cue which has changed it's feel and his not having competed for 3 months. He was helped by Ali Carter not playing very well either.

I find I'm only really interested in the class of 92. And then maybe Trump and Wilson.
Unfortunately, I can't really take to the Chinese players who are increasingly good but seem to lack any personality, or a lot of the young players.
I expect a Chinese Ronnie to emerge at some stage - or will he always be an enigma?
The world championship will move to China soon enough. Although we've seen the usual Saudi sports washing.
Watched Ronnie's match. He's out of touch and will probably lose. But Carter was awful so it's got to him.
Didn't watch all of any of the other matches - only bits. I'm entertained by Williams too but can't stand Allen.

In commentary I think they said the new ferrule he's using is titanium rather than the usual brass. "Takes a bit of getting used to" they said. I thought to myself, he's lucky he doesn't have to roll his cue on the table to make sure it's straight. That's what most of us do (or did) when selecting a cue from the rack at the smoke filled, beer sodden local snooker club.

True. There was also quite often a stitched up scar where someone had torn the cloth, fag burns around the table, at least one beer stain and a pocket with a hole at the bottom. Happy days when breaks were more counted for the number of balls potted rather than the points scored and there wouldn't be a single colour on it's spot after a short while.
The odds currently have Luca Brecel at 20/1 to reach the final and 45/1 to win it. Whether he does or not he's interesting to watch.

Nice article AS. It describes perfectly my memories of some of the places I played in. Many firms, e.g. Kennards and all Burton's, had their own tables for staff to use.

I agree with your comment about the Chinese players btw, they are good, but most seem to lack any personality.

Indeed, I was a member of my local snooker club in the Midlands. It had cheap pints and a 100 quid gambler but it was maybe 120 a year to be a member. It was a well maintained place - unlike some others.
In Ireland, I've seen one snooker club close down - a casino now. Another got rid of most of its tables - mainly a casino. But there is one, the tables are quite good but there's no cheap beer. Although there are more pool tables than snooker.
These days I play pool in the pub. Think I'll go there today.

I used to go to one near Victoria coach station which had cheese rolls on display which I'm pretty sure the manager knew by name and would've been deeply offended if anyone tried to buy one. Not that anyone ever did because they looked as though they could have appeared on a Time Team special.

Also, I had one of the first remote controls in the country for my telly. I used to sit in my chair with my extendable pool cue beside me and would lean over to prod the buttons on the TV with it to turn over (there was a button each for BBC 1 &2 and ITV - Channel 4 hadn't been invented yet). Each of the buttons had a thin layer of blue chalk on them.

Strange game between Brecel and Day. Misses, flukes (one absolute screamer from Brecel), in-offs, doubles. Entertaining in its difference if not the highest quality.
