How did a vital asset like the capacity to make our own steel ever fall into chinese ownership?

Answer: The Tories.

This is going to cost a pretty penny but credit to Labour who otherwise don't make much sense either with the ridiculous Royal Mail give-away, it could easily be Russian.

This was started by Thatcher of course, disposing of the nations assets particularly it's water supply to no benefit to its citizens but to foreign asset-strippers who pile up huge volumes of debt and have no actual interest in the British consumer at all.

These are also the people who left the EU over the issue of 'sovereignity' while they have actually been giving it away when in office since 1980.

A full program of re-nationalisation is I'm afraid far away but I live in hope.

A nation should own and be in control of, its own stuff.

The EU is a disaster zone and you don't have to be a member to trade with it.

You have some valid criticisms on privatisation as an ideology, however those who can remember the seventies are aware that nationalisation wasn't working.....However, it's a reality that a country that gives up total control of its food supply and means to build tanks (steel) is insane.....I support what Labour are doing on steel.

The Chinese appear to have the better model.....but that's not democratic.

What is happening with steel? Are Labour going to nationalise it? Or are they just saying they're going to do something?
At this stage they'll say anything and eighteen months later the steel will be gone with barely a whimper.

Its nothing more than a sticking plaster to try and defuse Reform making a meal out of it. Once the May local elections re out of the way, then they will lay off the workers and probably sell the site to a property developer. Or a theme park. Big on theme parks at the moment.

They were trying to keep the furnaces going this week. Unfortunately there seems to be no coal left in reserve. We used to have coal mines in Wales. We also had Port Talbot.
I went through Port Talbot today. boarded-up shops, empty houses. Factories shut.

All a massive dereliction of duty by the Tories. The same fate might await British Steel, but maybe it's not too late for them oop north. After all, they are English,...sort of. 😀

oh, wait a minute. Isn't burning coal bad for the environment ? tut tut 😀

It should never have been sold in 2020 to the Chinese. We can’t keep handing over assets to foreign owners who have their own agendas.
The impact on the local workforce would be devastating and the taxpayers take the burden in benefits, etc.
This Tory obsession with selling everything off goes back to Thatcher. Gas, water, rail - remember Railtrack and how that ended?
I can’t believe we don’t have people in the private sector who can’t run British Steel. Jim Radcliffe may know F all about football but He knows how to run INEOS.

They will ensure we retain our steel making capacity in this new world we all inhabit.

It's all about making the rich people richer.

When you can't do that, you're worth nothing. Not even Universal Credit or Disability Allowance.

Harold Macmillan doesn't appear to think much, correctly, of Margaret Thatcher and/or her policies:-

'Selling off the family silver' to try and balance the accounts has now been a total failure since 1983.

He did actually build some houses unusual for a tory government.

He gets a laugh as well.

Glad you can see into the future. They have said they will, more or less. But what they say and what they do are two different things.
Like no council tax rises.
No disability cuts
Etc.
So we'll see what happens.
I suspect there is a difference between having to amend current revenue/expenditure requirements in the light of events and the need to ensure long term security. Indeed there will probably have to be further amendments in the light of the latter.

When the world order has been upended the downstream impacts can be seismic. Don’t though let that stop you blaming the current government. It’s the easy option.

So you're already providing an excuse if the government doesn't do anything about the steel? Sorry, can't save the steel due to Trump!

Even Jim Ratcliffe can't make a decent football team/club out of a big turd. He'll be struggling for quite some time.
I would think the government are just buying time on making big calls, because you want to make the right long-term decision. That's what Id hope for. But our elites all seem too busy enjoying their own life at taxpayers expense, rather than making decisions for the greater good.

These Elites are just shockingly poor.

Completely the reverse. Trump’s attitude means painful decisions cannot be avoided.

I expect that national security requirements will require that the steel mills are saved even if that means tax rises or cuts to benefits.

Sounds ridiculous. It's not that expensive to have one nationalised steel works. But no doubt this lot will have a way to make it really, really expensive and also ineffectual.
It could even run at a profit if anyone could be bothered to do anything about it. It could certainly run without huge losses and be a factor in making an area prosperous.
