agent fees

The Premier League spent/wasted £409m on agent fees last year. A staggering amount.

Palace at £12m are 16th in the table, and that seems reasonable, however, it is equivalent to the whole season's home gate receipts and about 7% of total revenues.

I think Simon Jordan, for all his faults, is the only owner who has tried to limit agent fees over the years.
It seems bizarre that an agent can spend a few weeks negotiating/facilitating a deal and will earn a 7 or even 8 figure fee.

It really is a vulgar amount of money for a role that doesn't add anything.

Even worse when in a lot of cases they are dad/brother etc

Probably cost us relegation when Cahill went to Everton years ago. Jordan told his agent to FO when he came for more last minute. That’s how I read it.

I think it may have been there was a £1m (ish) agent fee to pay to complete the deal. Apparently Cahill expected that to be paid by CPFC. However, Jordan did say "FO, he is your agent, working for you and we are not paying him". The deal then collapsed.

It does seem strange that clubs appear to be OK paying astonishing amounts of money to agents that are appointed by players. These agents are there to get the max for their player and to screw the clubs for as much as possible. Then get paid a fortune by the club for doing so.

Perhaps it shows that football can be a real heart ruling head business.

Do they really have a choice though..?

Particularly when it comes to the really top players - there are more clubs that want them than there are players of that standard, and so you either stand on principle and don't sign any of them, or you bite the bullet and pay the fee.

I don't see how you remain competitive in the sport today if you don't pay agent's fees, so I don't think it is a case of heart ruling head for the clubs. The clubs know they're being ripped off, but the alternative is worse to them.
