Crystal Palace vs. Liverpool match thread

Overall I was heartened by our performance. They tried hard but a lack of ball control told and our finishing was woeful.
We failed to replace our major losses, in particular Lacroix who masterminded our defence.

It's a shame that Sage was given an inexperienced team and little time to mould them.

I think he will be sacked but unsure who will succeed him. Can't think the better out of work managers will want to come. We have too many promising players who need time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League.

Perhaps Osorio is our best prospect. We need Mateta and Sarr back otherwise we are doomed.

Replacing Sage is not going to change anything, the game plan looked good today, luck deserted them but the major issues are that we can't score or defend and the table reflects that. These problems have been our nemesis for sometime now and not just under Sage. The next window is not going to save us so we may as well accept that this wonderful run in the EPL will end this season. OG knew that and I suspect walked for that reason.
You may well have a point but we have to try

Absolute rubbish

Well the game today shows the improvement we've been waiting months for. From pre season right up until the Hoffenheim game it was the same thing over and over with no signs of change but I'm pleased with what I saw today despite the scoreline.
However it does feel like too little too late. We are right at the bottom of the table now with a staggering 24 goals conceded and we need to see more change and quickly.

It's disappointing because after today I would like to see us stick with Sage, but not if it's going to take fourteen games to see improvement each time.

SP: "Further to our recent discussion, and I appreciate it's a tall order, if you get us out of the relegation zone and we survive for another season, I'll name the new stand after you. "The Sean Dyche Stand". How does that sound?"
SD: "Sounds mighty tempting Steve. Tell you what - chuck in a £10m bonus and you've got yourself a deal."

Beaky had done some fantastic things for the club but he has undoubtedly played his part in the situation we find ourselves in.
1. We need a new manager
2. We need funds to bolster the squad in January
3. We need the ultras back to improve our atmosphere
Just my opinion
Why did the ultras leave?

Sarr, Mateta and Osorio will get us out of trouble. Defence all right as well today in spite of 3 against. And Becker again Liverpool POTM, we could easily have scored 3 as well. Hopefully our next manager was present and saw first hand what we are capable of....

Maybe we realistically do not have the players to spoil ourselves with an exotic 3-4-3 formation which was the baby of the previous manager anyway.
This feels so much like the Holloway/Pulis season with the arrival of an enormous amount of sub-standard strangers in the summer and a manager stretched at this level.
Time for two banks of four to dig ourselves out of this Pulis-style?
Probably.

Statistics say otherwise and they go back way before Sage arrived, the squad overall is not EPL quality and the results support that hypothesis.
When I recently suggested that this is our worst squad for some time a few took umbrage. But it is, the table doesn't lie, and when matched with a tactical buffoon like Sage there was only one way it was heading. The next person (if there is going to be one) needs to go back to basics and just attempt to do things in a competent manner. It's a big ask.

Entertaining match but if you want to beat an opponent you have to be able to defend as a team. Liverpool did that and unlike us hardly gave the ball away when in possession. It’s no wonder we are bottom and that won’t change with Sage in charge. It might change with a new manager if our players are coached to defend as a team, especially when they lose the ball. Pino gave the ball away with his first touch today. That just can’t happen unless you have players around you to win it back. With wing backs so far upfield you are screwed when that happens. And again it happened again and again. We are definitely going down if we don’t change Sage NOW!

We’re just a complete mess, a highly unprofessional side.

I’ve no idea what Sage is doing, it’s some sort of playground football which flattered to deceive against a lacklustre Liverpool who still scored three:

  • The defence needs no explaining.
  • Stupid flicks which go nowhere.
  • Continually losing possession needlessly.
  • No end product whatsoever.
  • Inability to defend set pieces.
  • Slowing down our own attacks as there’s no tactics.
  • No structure to our defence or attack. The whole team in fact.
  • Bizarrely incapable of keeping the ball on the ground.
  • Lack of leadership.
  • No ‘heart’.

The list of issues is endless. Players have to shoulder the blame too but this boils down to a manager completely out of his depth.

Was a terrible appointment and it’s costing us dearly. A dreadful miscalculation.

Let’s try a league 2 manager. Play 4-4-2, 2 big men up front, 2 proper wingers, get ball wide, beat your man, cross it in. It worked in Championship manager ‘98, maybe all these modern tactics won’t be able to work out the good old stuff 😊
