Oliver Glasner and Slow Starts

Location
Whitstable
Country
England
Pinched from The Athletic but I found it interesting that Glasner has a recent history with starting seasons quite slowly before things suddenly click.

In 2020/21 as Wolfsburg manager, they went unbeaten for their first 11 games BUT they only won one of their first six, drawing five. They slipped as low as 15th in the table during that run before suddenly going on to win four of their next five and eventually finishing third in the Bundesliga. They also won the Europa League that season.

In 2021/22 he took over Frankfurt. They won just won of their opening ten matches, ridiculously enough away to Bayern Munich, and were down in 15th. However, they then won six of their next seven games and ended up finishing 11th.

2022/23 he was still at Frankfurt, once again beginning slowly with two points from their first three games. Once again they suddenly kicked into gear, won eight of their next 11 games and ended up finishing 7th.

Then, finally, 2023/24 he comes to Palace midway through the season, wins just one of his first six and then, of course, wins six and draws one of our final seven, taking us from 14th up to 10th.

So, although it's been a frustrating start to the season, it seems to be par for the course with him in charge. He seems to be streaky and, with any luck, suddenly we'll get on another good run soon once everything clicks.

Interesting, but didn't he win the Europa League with Frankfurt not Wolfsburg? Actually I know he did as they beat the Spammers in the semi final and Rangers on pens in the final.

Do we not more often than not have a slow start anyway, pick up some form then can't win or score to save our lives and then the traditional purple patch towards the end of the season?

I have this groundhog season feeling again. Although we might go far in the cups this season.

2024/25 - Zero wins, three draws and five defeats in opening eight league games. Three wins, four draws and one defeat in following eight games. Plus wins in the cup.

Our next eight games seem much more winnable too, Arsenal and Chelsea aside, so no reason to think we won't now start moving up the table.

Anyway, if we start next season like a bag of s***, let's try to remember that it's par for the course with OG.

That last transfer window really tripped us up and then having 7 first teamers out was a real double whammy. It’s no coincidence that the return of injured players is having an impact. I had no doubts that OG would get things back on track…

Quote from OG referencing Sarr which helps explain, (when you add in the new signings, injuries and Euro players) why we are only just getting up to speed:

“Obviously, you have to understand the situation where he wasn’t allowed to train with his former team during pre-season,” said Glasner. “He trained individually and then arrived 10 days before the Premier League started without four months of team training and any games or minutes in pre-season with us.

“With a new team and a new way of playing, it took time for him to get fit, understand how we wanted to play and see where he could use and show his strengths. He got used to this and today he got the reward, which was the two goals. He could have had another assist with the disallowed goal from Danny Munoz. That was a good performance.”

“Yes, he’s different,” said Glasner. “We knew we couldn’t replace Michael one-for-one because he’s his own profile and has his own qualities. Ismaila is more direct. He has a lot of pace, and we knew that when we can get him into the right areas and at the right moment, he will get the chances and start scoring goals.

If we start next season badly under Glasner I'd be worried. There are no international tournaments to interfere with our pre-season preparations and, hopefully, we'll sign players somewhat earlier than we did this last summer.

The only good thing about our pre-season was that it gave Glasner the opportunity to look at a number of our youngsters. Devenny is rapidly becoming a squad regular who gets game time and I expect the other two bench youngsters (Kporha and Agbinone) to get more more minutes later in the season once we've left teh relegation zone far behind, which I;m confident we'll do.
