Tottenham vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Palace appealing Mateta's red card. A desperate roll of the dice?

Probably but they do have the Nyoni 1st minute tackle in the Liverpool v Arsenal game to turn to as evidence of inconsistent refereeing. His tackle was clearly more intentional than Mateta's and he didn't even get a yellow. If Nyoni doesn't get a yellow for that tackle, Mateta shouldn't have been sent off. Of course, the panel may decide that Nyoni should have been sent off, then what?

He gets suspended and Liverpool bring in Szoboszlai. That'll learn them.

Appeals by the smaller clubs never succeed.

Also, Oliver went away and looked hard at the video. Will they really counter a closely considered decision made by the nation's FIFA world cup ref?

Not sure how Glasner ‘outdid’ Parish there. He was one of the hot managerial candidates in Europe, then threw his toys out of the pram, publicly slagged off his owners and players, and took his team on an horrendous run of form.

He was desperate to be sacked and all he achieved was tanking his stock. He would have been a serious contender for the United job had he not blown it, and instead he ended up at Forest.

Meanwhile Parish didn’t rise to the bait publicly, we stayed up comfortably, and won another trophy.
Spot on.

Especially as he’s saying hé didn’t see the defender. Which begs the question, why did you go off your feet?
I have a lot of sympathy for the appeal case. To me, much the same argument was clear at the time.

Palace had a counter attack opportunity with a player sprinting into acres of space on the right if Mateta could poke the ball onwards into that space. The pass was played behind him, so he spun around and threw himself towards it in the hope of getting that touch. He didn't see Van Der Ven coming at the moment he launched himself.

I can see why they decided red, but to me Mateta was unlucky overall. The really irritating thing is that the best ref we have, who was up with play, aware of the context, and had a feel for events up close, thought a yellow was sufficient. Once VAR gets involved he's never going to overrule them, but VAR pays no attention to context, intent, or anything else in the real world, only close up slow motion replays.

No flabbergasting required. The FA have confirmed the card and suspension remain in place. They didn't hang around with this one.
One thing's for sure Teddy, the poor and inconsistent refereeing and over enthusiastic VAR involvement is ruining our game.

It'll be interesting to see how Liverpool behave at our place on Sunday after Iraola has told Isak he should have gone down when he felt his shirt pulled. Too many bloomin' cheats ruining our game too.

Agree. I was in favour of VAR when it was first suggested thinking it would cut out big club bias - enough said on that. It sucks the spontaneity and excitement out of the game.

Perhaps he never realised !
He certainly never appealed to the referee.

Maybe, I'm not so sure. I think he felt the pull because he was about to head the ball and he was prevented from making it.
I give him the benefit of the doubt for acting as a true professional by not appealing. He got on with his game without making a fuss. I like to see that in a player. Olise was a good example - often bouncing up immediately after a dubious tackle.
Anyway, Iraola obviously thinks his players should copy the Arsenal example and go to ground as if hit by a sledgehammer to win a free kick or (worse still) try to have a player cautioned or sent off. I've not seen any comment by Iraola about Mac Allister's dreadful behaviour. Speaks volumes.

I've just re-watched a Youtube clip at normal speed, both the defenders are in his peripheral vision. He lunged and caught his achilles tendon with his studs, which I assume is why the ref gave a red.

In today's game, it's a red card. JP may not have intended it, but a studs-up challenge on the Achilles at speed is always going to be red (unless you're Arsenal). I think the club probably challenged it out of desperation, as without JP, and JSL injured, we're pretty f**ked.

Thankfully, the appeal was not considered "Frivolous", had they done so he would have been banned for 4 games.

I wonder would we get away with shaving Sarrs head and saying he is Mateta and buy Mateta a wig and tell him to be a miserable b****** and don't smile and put him on as Sarr would we get away with it . 😏🤔
