I think people recognise that our current central defenders need a defensive midfield shield in front of them more than Guehi and Lacroix did, neither of whom were troubled by defending one on one.

A fit Doucoure could probably fulfill that role, but if and when?
Wharton tends to go to ground and dive in and is often bypassed.
Kamada tries to intercept passes or shepherd players away from danger areas, but he's not a naturally defensive player or strong tackler.
Timber has the physicalty and ability to win the ball but looks to lack the defensive discipline to play a holding role.

In some ways Lerma or Hughes seem the best current fit, but as others have pointed out it's most unlikely that they will be starters.

There's no need to start both of them in midfield; Hughes alongside one of our current ones would suffice IMO.

I'd say one of our biggest problem is not who should partner who in midfield but more the fact that we play most games with one less midfielder than our opposition. This leads to us getting dominated in the middle of the pitch and often our midfield is completely bypassed by any decent forward pass.

I don’t agree that Wharton and Timber don’t play well together. It’s the system that doesn’t work, having our wingbacks caught upfield multiple times in a game is a recipe for disaster. Much as he seems a decent enough bloke, I think we should swap Sage asap. We need someone really good with Premiership experience to replace him though. I think 🤣 would be ok. Or Howe.

I agree with this, having earlier said I'd start him against Spurs. I still would if our fitness guys feel he can do 45 mins but I do realise he has been out a long time and his fitness and core strength have to be rebuilt carefully which means gradually.

Unlike the Fulham, game this Spurs, game should tell us exactly where we are at. Nothing will be better than if the result reflects a marked improvement , this has to be what every Palace person will be wanting.
If not the club should have seen enough to know that Sage, is not on top of the situation and is not likely to be. Nothing is going to please me more than having Palace succeed hope that happens tomorrow.
I was sure we could beat Fulham and im equally sure we can get a result of some kind at Spurs. Its Spurs. They have been dogshit for nearly 3 seasons. Our dogshittedness stems only from August when competent defenders were sold.

My thoughts precisely. As I said above, either they're good enough or they're not, and this is as good a game as any to assess where they stand given what we have seen previously.

Granted that this is a forum for the exchange of ideas, views, prejudices and the odd rant, the truth, I suspect, is that Sage has forgotten more about football than the vast majority of his critics will ever know. Perhaps only those who have done their UEFA coaching badges should venture an opinion. This isn't Champ Man.

The same argument could have been used with DeBoer.
Does that mean he should have been exempt from comment or criticism?

It is a discussion forum after all and the fact that a manager has a UEFA badge does not mean they are infallible or even not downright useless.

Massive sliding doors moment for Sage.
If he loses to spurs and Liverpool in the league, I think he’s gone irrespective of the hoffenheim result.
But IF he was to get 3/4 or even 6 points and a positive result against hoffenheim.
We’d be in the quarterfinals of the league cup, 2 wins and a draw out of 4 games in Europe and hull and Coventry next in the league. We’d be flying. It could happen 🔴🔵

Just go to a back 4 and have lerma in front with doucoure slowly being introduced and given minutes here and there, build from the back. it really is that simple, lets just worry about trying to sort our defence out, we have enough quality, we will create chances. We all understand Sage probably hasn't been given the easiest job but if he persists then he only has himself to blame when he's sacked.

Its almost laughable if it wasnt so pitiful, a simple formation change, CBs playing at CB, not FBs, FBs playing as FBs, not WBs, Wingers playing wide and crodding the ball, not No 10s, etc, its pathetic, Coaching badges they would be better with a DIY manual.
