Newcastle Predictions.

If possible, we need to try and play the same back five, as all the chopping and changing can't help. I thought Disasi looked much better and more commanding on Thursday night, but he probably needs games to get back to his best. In fact, injuries and fitness allowing, I'd like to see us start the same team as on Thursday, but maybe make earlier subs than normal as players tire. The team showed a lot of character and fight, and it'd be good to see if they can carry that momentum into today.

I think we can edge this one 2-1. A JP brace.

Mateta coming back and playing well makes a huge difference to us. I don't understand this idea that we have been impressive going forward but struggled defensively. We've scored 9 goals in 7 league games, and failed to score a goal (of our own) in 4 if those games. If that's us when we are being a goal threat then I shudder to think what we'll be like in a lean spell.

Hopefully Mateta can change that, and if Sarr can continue to play more then we actually might be in business. That gives me hope.

Newcastle seem to be in a similar situation to us. I think whoever concedes first will not only have to contend with being a goal behind, they'll also have to handle the latest knock to collective belief and confidence.

I imagine Sage will try and press Newcastle. Bit risky in terms of energy having played a high tempo, distant away game on Thursday. I advise against looking at the stats on how teams do on the Sunday after an away trip in Europe in the Thursday. Grim reading.

Still, if we can press Newcastle into errors early on, and get ahead, they might go to pot. Perhaps in such circumstances we should just go for it, and tired legs be damned? I imagine we will, that it'll work for a bit, and then we'll run out of steam.

3-3.

Chopping and changing the defense certainly doesn’t help. What we need is for players to stand up and play well enough to secure their place. We can’t keep playing players like Khalali and Canvot who keep giving away goals, making mistakes and playing poorly. Only Mitchell is nailed on in his position. We need others to step up and play tactics that suit the resources available

If JPM plays like he did on Thursday he’s a huge handful for opposing defences. Makes a big difference.

As you say talk of our attacking play is overblown. We average 1.3 goals a league game. Not exactly potent. I think people mistake having loads of players charge up the pitch aimlessly for attacking play. We don’t look very controlled in attack or defence. What is the pattern of play that is trying to get goals? It’s hard to identify.

Mateta is head and shoulders above any other striker we have got. Why he earns less than Larsen makes no sense at all. If he stays fit, we should be doing well by January. Unless we have signed a longer contract with him, I very much doubt he will still be at palace in february.
Three points today assuming he plays.

I would respectfully disagree with this. He has a knack of scoring at critical times (like against Besiktas) but if you look at the overall picture, the amount of time he has been at the club, his poor record in front of goal before Glasner arrived, the incredible amount of chances laid on a plate for him during Olise, Eze's time at the club, The fact he still only converts around 1 in 4 clear cut chances and sometimes we are talking open goals too.
I have spoken with a couple of very experienced coaches in recent months. Guys that know more than me about positioning, holding your run, etc (probably more than most on here too to be blunt) and although his current goal stats would suggest otherwise Strand-Larson is apparently a much better finisher.
But that said, we have no choice but to go with Mateta now anyway. I imagine JSL will be out for a while. From the teams perspective lets hope JPM hits some form. If not him then hopefully Sarr will rediscover his goals.

This is it in a nutshell, what is the Palace identity? So far this season I haven't seen anything that looks like a set pattern of play, unless of course one considers chaotic playground tactics as a way forward.
Incidentally I note that Glasner's Forest are in the relegation drop zone., which suggests to me that the 3 at the back with flying wingbacks is a fad that has been found out and there is no real reason for Sage to use it under the pretence of "continuity".

No doubt JPM is infuriating with the number of chances he misses but all round he is much more of a handful with this presence and movement.

Saying JSL is a better finisher but scores fewer goals in matches feels a bit like in cricket where a team says a batter is hitting them really well in the nets but they keep getting out for low scores. Having said that I do think if we played with wingers and got crosses in we’d see a much more potent version of JSL

If mateta can be bothered and put a shift in like he did the other night in turkey and play like he actually wants to be here(or putting himself in the shop window more like) then I agree. He rattles defenders when he’s putting himself about and it stops the ball keep coming straight back because defenders haven’t got the time on the ball.

i predict our defense to be leaky. Beyond that, i really cannot say. whether or not Mateta can score enough to rescue us ? who knows. I reckon 2-3 Newcastle.

I agree with this. The system had been worked out and found out for most of last season. Teams let us have the ball, won it back and just played it quickly into the spaces behind the wing backs. Watching Ipswich play Forest that’s exactly what they did. All we’ve done this season is make the spaces behind the wing backs into yawning chasms and added in a massive gap between defence and midfield for good measure.

Shame he's injured just as McNeil has got in when crossing is his game.

The defence played well on Thursday night, with Besiktas restricted to only a few chances. The second goal was the midfield's fault, and the first, it could be argued, was due to a lack of communication, which with a settled defence would hopefully improve. I don't see anyone on the bench who has demonstrated they would improve the backline that started on Thursday. Mingueza, in particular, has looked way off PL quality so far (surprising given his pedegree). Canvot is easily our quickest centre-back, and Khalaili has been one of our biggest attacking outlets. Both do need to focus on doing the simple stuff well, but for me I wouldn't change things, unless Tomiyashu has recovered (he's the only one who looks like improving our backline). It's all opnions, though, innit.

Fair enough. I agree we need to find a settled combination. As you say maybe that first goal on Thursday wouldn’t have happened with a settled understanding between the three at the back. When we had Guehi, Lacroix and Richards apart from the obvious fact two of those are much better players than what we have, it was the settled nature of it that meant they played as a very tight unit.

Yeah. I was hoping to see more of McNeil getting crosses in. His best attribute is delivery with his left foot. I don’t think the system suits either McNeil or JSL very well
