Time

This is all true. Not one of our summer signings has been a clear success so far. Not one. Timber is closest but even then his positional play has been poor at times leaving the midfield empty. The others have so far been failures let’s face it. Still early days so I am not writing them all off. However there is no doubt we are much weaker in positions where we need to play one of the new players.

Our best eleven at this point probably consists of ten of the players from last year plus whichever of the right wing backs you decide on.

Then you add in we signed players on decent fees who don’t look like featuring in Gozo and Osario (why???) and you do question what the plan was supposed to be.
Indeed the season is in its infancy, however the fact remains that we have conceded 22 goals in 11 matches this season (All competitions) and this is an area of real concern.

Yeah, we certainly had a few gamble signings, didn't we, Larsen, Johnson, those gambles paid off.
Out of the two thought johnson was less of a gamble . And just put it down to Thomas Frank . But He has lost his way big time . Larsen is scoring and battling at times price tag 20m to much , still young enough to improve . But mateta was called a waste of space many a time . But yes even players you expect things from . All of a sudden turn to rat s*** .

We also scored 20 . Last season we only scored 41 in the lge 33 in cups
There is no getting away from the fact that we have the worst defence in the division. Historically bad by our standards. We’ve scored a few but overall we’ve lost a lot. That’s why we have the worst goal difference at -8.

Our start to the season was as easy as we could have hoped for in the league yet we sit two points above the relegation zone having shipped the most goals in the division. We’ve played two good teams by Premier League standards and conceded nine goals in those games.

You can’t window dress the start to the season has been shambolic and bad.

Winning the Europa League and getting relegated in the same season would be the most Palace thing ever.
I’d take that, another trophy while we can and the championship doesn’t scare me, it would freshen it up again as the league can get a bit mundane, same old same old, especially our home form

True but we've conceded more, which means losses and lack of forward momentum overall. A team that wins 1-0 will have scored less than a team that loses 2-3 but will be much higher up the table. I think you are clutching at straws and trying to put some positive spin on what has been a poor campaign thus far.

Hendo could be back tomorrow and Mateta is back and looking likely Let's wait and see if they make a difference. Glass half full? Possibly but it's fuller than it was last week.

...like an ever-rollong stream bears all its sons away (and daughters, of course).

But back to football.

Many (probably most) of us recognize that it takes time for new players to gel with the rest of the squad. This is even more so when the players come to us from leagues outside the UK. We've seen Kamada take an age to settle and perform for us; Pino, too has taken a long time. Lacroix was quicker (about 3-4 months) and yet some are writing off our newbies already.

This last summer window saw a massive turnover - 5 players out and no fewer than 11 in - not to mention a new manager.

Looking at the new players:
  • we have 3 players from minor leagues (Osorio, Khalaili and Gozo) who will need more time to adjust to the Premier League. They may not be able to, but let's give them a chance.
  • The other 8 all come from one of the big five European leagues. Apart from Tomiyasu (who's already shown us he's capable (but the injury issues were always a gamble) only McNeil, Disasi, and to a limited extent Guessand, have PL experience. The Disasi along with the Tomiyasu injury haven't helped the moulding of a back 3.
I suggest we really do need to give both the manager and the new players more time before writing them all off. I'm not saying they're all going to come good but I reckon some will given time.
And the experienced Riad is injured too plus we've lacked Mateta and Sarr. ( and still score via this system )

I'll always wonder if we give up on this manager and system before both are given a real chance.

That's the same as someone saying that the goals we've scored wipe out the goals we've conceded. We all have our agendas, I guess, and yours seems to be to refuse to see the merits of what Sage brings.

Had Riad, Tomiyasu, Henderson and Disasi not all been missing for over a month, I bet we'd have beaten Ipswich and probably got a few more points on top. Add Mateta and Sarr into the mix and we'd be better still. Give Khalaili more time to bed in and, again, we should be better.

The anti-Sage brigade are the one's clutching at straws.

Is this the same Riad who has played 11 competitive games with us in three years and 37 in his whole career or some other Riad who is actually an experienced footballer?

Nobody is “anti Sage” we are just pointing out conceding 17 goals in 7 games is not a recipe for success in this League because that’s just a fact.

More from the "if only, woulda, coulda, shoulda" school of argument. Fact is they weren't and we didn't.
I look at the overall pattern of play and form an opinion on that alone. Thus far we concede far to easily, and this cancels out the merit of scoring some well worked goals. At this stage I'm not for or against Sage - I ask: can he do a job? Has he got time in which to do it? A convincing performance and win against Newcastle will help.

On Thursday night, the players responded to a manager who is under pressure and he will probably be one game away from being sacked for the foreseeable.
If he had lost the changing room, then I think that would have shown on Thursday. Maybe putting his hands up to the Brighton defeat is what the players wanted/needed to see. Who knows!
We can’t get away from some poor signings, together with the disorganised defence but I’m feeling more confident for the Newcastle game and will go for a 2-1 win to us.
