...like an ever-rollong stream bears all its sons away (and daughters, of course).

But back to football.

Many (probably most) of us recognize that it takes time for new players to gel with the rest of the squad. This is even more so when the players come to us from leagues outside the UK. We've seen Kamada take an age to settle and perform for us; Pino, too has taken a long time. Lacroix was quicker (about 3-4 months) and yet some are writing off our newbies already.

This last summer window saw a massive turnover - 5 players out and no fewer than 11 in - not to mention a new manager.

Looking at the new players:
  • we have 3 players from minor leagues (Osorio, Khalaili and Gozo) who will need more time to adjust to the Premier League. They may not be able to, but let's give them a chance.
  • The other 8 all come from one of the big five European leagues. Apart from Tomiyasu (who's already shown us he's capable (but the injury issues were always a gamble) only McNeil, Disasi, and to a limited extent Guessand, have PL experience. The Disasi along with the Tomiyasu injury haven't helped the moulding of a back 3.
I suggest we really do need to give both the manager and the new players more time before writing them all off. I'm not saying they're all going to come good but I reckon some will given time.

I think you're right. However it sometimes appears these are good players - some might not work out for any number of reasons but they are talented.
Sage's position would likely become untenable if the teams below us start winning but until and unless that happens he's probably safe(ish). Hope so anyway.

I concur with everything you say.

I also realize that if we somehow won the PL with Sage there would be be people calling for him to get fired when we lost our first match afterwards. It is the reality of life being a manager for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

I agree with much of this but, of course, the rest of the league won't give us time to come good.

That's why too much change in too short a period is so risky, especially when so much of it involves unknown quantities of varying descriptions.

If we have a scouting network, which is debatable, I know. Anyway, if we do, the recruitment of players should be looked at so that any players we sign can hit the ground running. The people at Palace know exactly when the season starts, ends, etc. If the recruitment department can't work together with our playing staff/department and have players ready exactly when they are required, then the recruitment staff are not doing their bloody job properly, are they?

Your talking ideal world vs real world. It may sound easy to you , but I very much doubt it . Cost v money available . Our best resist signings was gambles which worked in our favour . Hopefully one day we can get players that can hit the ground running , but at the moment thats not going to happen

If they are currently playing outside of the prem how would you ever know that for certain?

You look at style of play, strengths, performances in specific games (e.g. Europe) talent ceiling etc.

Additionally as we've seen this year vs last year, tactical deployments makes players look very different.

Yeah, we certainly had a few gamble signings, didn't we, Larsen, Johnson, those gambles paid off.

I thought that was what having a scouting network was for. To find players who fit the Premiership in general and Crystal Palace F.C. in particular. I thought that was why they are called football scouts.

We have brought in a number of young prospects if they work out the scouting dept will have done their job.

The issue is not with the future but now, do we have enough experience to carry us through whilst the prospects learn.

Time is not a luxury afforded in the Premier League where 3 points are at stake every time you take the field.
The majority of transfers have potential risk attached but to my mind we took unnecessary risks in the summer.
Most of the players bought in caveats against them e.g good if he can stay fit ( which he hasn’t- Tomiyasu), potential but unproven at Premier League level ( Gozo , Osorio and Ahanor), players discarded by present clubs ( Disasi and Guessand) , players with overseas reputations but new to the country and the League ( Khailali and Mingueza), and a player brought in to enable us to offload Johnson (McNeil).

At least we we didn’t bring in Sterling which was a rumour at one time!

I acknowledge that Kamada and Lacroix were new to the league and the country too and inexperienced at Premier League level, but they were not new to Glasner who knew exactly what they could bring and how they would fit in to his plans.

I also acknowledge that some of our signings may come good in time, even if Sage isn’t afforded the same courtesy.

Nonetheless , it seems to me that we have broadened the squad with a real loss of quality and we have quite a few squad fillers now as opposed to players who are screaming out as starters.

Yes it takes time to put together a decent side capable of challenging. The FA cup winning side started to take shape in 2020, eventual goal scorer Eze having signed that year. He himself would work with 3 different managers, all who must have made an impression on him. Tyrick Mitchell also got his first team break that year. Therefore the task facing Sage is not something he will overcome in the short term, in reality it looks like he is still searching for his best line up, and with Europe added to the mix will have to tinker with his squad in the time being.

The task facing Sage is to ensure that we do not concede so many goals and this will have to be rectified sooner rather than later.

In other words, as I posted a couple of weeks ago, does Sage have time? We concede virtual every game, and some real soppy goals too, none more than in the most recent game. It has been suggested that we were much improved for that performance, pity then that all the good work was undone by schoolboy defending, the same that has led to many other goals against us.
How much time does Sage need of indeed have?

Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme....but especially Sage and Time

Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

The media are marinating themselves in a cauldron of speculation.

This is all true. Not one of our summer signings has been a clear success so far. Not one. Timber is closest but even then his positional play has been poor at times leaving the midfield empty. The others have so far been failures let’s face it. Still early days so I am not writing them all off. However there is no doubt we are much weaker in positions where we need to play one of the new players.

Our best eleven at this point probably consists of ten of the players from last year plus whichever of the right wing backs you decide on.

Then you add in we signed players on decent fees who don’t look like featuring in Gozo and Osario (why???) and you do question what the plan was supposed to be.
