Besiktas vs. Crystal Palace match thread

It was better but coming from such a low base that it was only ok. We didn’t look so wide open and didn’t conceded after 3 minutes but those should be basic expectations. A result that doesn’t get Sage sacked immediately but doesn’t put him out of danger either. Newcastle, even in their current form, will be a much stiffer test.

I think we can all see as well we ain’t going anywhere in the Europa League either. The depth of good teams is far too much for us
There goes my smile. Reality bites.

System is the issue again Sage wants us playing this high line well we dont have the players who can do that they are too slow physical/mental wise which is why we get caught out just like we have seen again.

Wharton has been poor again sloppy passing.

Please get Pino off guys useless might as well be down to 10 men when he plays.

Mateta being Mateta should have scored 3 in this game.

McNeil waste of time only thing he is good at is putting balls in the box and we dont even have him playing that role.

With every game it looks like manager has no clue he is stuck in I will play this way and this player will do this and that.

Lets see if he does change anything or does odd subs like he has past few games.
Glad to see the HOL’s very own Sage (not sarge) got everything spot on again 🤣 thank f*** you don’t give the half time talks or make the subs

Yes we need to settle on a back 3 if we're sticking with that formation and I agree with the 3 last night. There are flaws but they need time to gel, although we have to accept they won't be as good as last year.
Tomiyasu and Lerma can provide cover. Not sure about the Italian lad, but in any event he won't be here next year.
Good last night but we need some consistency. Still unsure about Pierre but accept the options are limited.
Big mistake leaving Lerma out of Europa squad

Well…I’m definitely on ‘Team Positive’ this morning.

I know it’s only one game..but we learned quite a lot….

Namely…
*Wharton works better with Kamada by his side.
*Disalli is more effective in the centre of the 3 CB - Richards was better in his usual position
* JPM is our main striker and someone who gives the team lots of confidence.
* Pino is like a different player this season, and dare I say, a key to our success.
*Benitez has been a good understudy, but having Henderson back is a huge moral boost.
* Glimpses of the old Sarr last night
* Osorio deserves more minutes - he looks a real talent

There you go, crash helmet on, ready for the inevitable slaughter…😂

If you'll pardon the expression you may remove your helmet. Good points all round.

No slaughter, and agree with the points raised although I may not be as generous on Sarr and Osario at this stage.
I need more persuasion.

This is what my dear wife muttered when we first met !
Returning to the match last night, there were certainly positives and hopefully we witness the same against Newcastle.
I am actually cautiously optimistic about our prospects on Sunday.

Thought that was an excellent and highly encouraging performance from us last night. Not sure quite why there is still some negativity.

We worked our arses off, closed them down relentlessly, looked dangerous every time we went forward and overall, despite conceding two again, I thought did look more defensively sound.

Mateta was a menace. McNeil surprised me by putting in a real shift. Pino is class. Like what I saw from the wingbacks.

The referee was shocking. I can't believe he didn't review our opening goal properly and think we had a couple of penalty shouts ignored. If a couple of those decisions had gone our way we could have put a few past them in what was a hostile atmosphere.

If we keep playing with that intensity we will be fine this season. Glenn Hoddle was very positive about us on commentary.

Agree with most of your comments. A word of caution though they did put put out a weakened side so we should not get too carried away.

Stop the f*cking press. And please don't tell us how you managed to persuade your missus.

Anyone else think that Benitez should have done better with both of their goals? He is good when it’s at or close to him but never seems to dive full length at wider shots. Henderson would most likely have saved both yesterday.

The Besiktas opening goal was similar to Nottm Forest's goal on Sunday, a low shot beating Benitez diving to his left. Perhaps Henderson would have made saves with his foot.

We're a different team with Mateta leading the line - gives us so much more of an outlet to get up the pitch.

Pino is starting to become the player we thought we'd signed - while he can still be a little careless in possession, he looks dangerous in every game and the moments of quality seem to be coming more regularly. One of the biggest positives to the early season for me.

Wharton and Kamada give us a lot more stability in midfield and we looked better as a result, but Wharton still looks a way short of his best to me.

Worryingly I think that's probably our strongest centre-back trio - Disasi concerns me at times but he's the most Lacroix-like in playing style and looks the most natural in the centre of the three.

It's encouraging that the team were up for the battle and showed a reaction from Sunday, and whilst it was obviously a much improved performance, I'm still far from convinced that we've got enough for the Prem - Besiktas were a poor side and we still look far too vulnerable.

Not sure about the first, but very likely Hendo would've saved the second. Walter was well out of position.

Very good point, we shouldn’t go overboard with that draw. I’m thinking with them bringing on first teamers later in the match the sending off saved us? We looked better for sure with Matetta and Disasi back. This Sunday will be a truer test and hopefully we are turning a corner and becoming a better side all round?

The performance also has to be appreciated after the Brighton disaster. Bouncebackability in action.
