Besiktas vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Much better with Kamada alongside Wharton. Not sure how Timber gets back in unless he shows more discipline as a DM. The back three have been working better. Disasi getting credit from Matterface but playing the other two in their correct positions and the wing backs a little deeper has made a difference. Mateta had a huge game and McNeil did more in 60 minutes than Johnson did in all the time he was with us. Pino had a good game too. Of the starting eleven Benitez’s was the only poor performance.

I can think of one way - drop one of the 3 distinctly average centre backs for him. As good as the performance was, someone please explain to me how or why we wouldn’t be able to play that way or press that way if we had a 3 man midfield and dropped one of the 3 ball watchers?

Wanted to see the players reaction tonight after Sunday. Overall, I thought they put a shift in and this suggests they are supporting Sage. Our defence/midfield let us down twice tonight and we got punished. We were much weaker once the subs were on but that’s about the quality available and not Sage.
Play like this against Newcastle and we should get a result.
Hoddle would make a great mentor, sees things as they are but also provides solutions - that’s just with a snapshot of what he saw tonight.

Went to bed after 30mins to tired to listen . Sounded like improvement from Sunday but . There is a major issue around our CB , think unless tomiyasu gets injury free we are going to struggle with the ones we have . January window cant come quick enough .
Not sure how Sage is going to get round this without loosing some of our attacking. Even with 4 at the back it won't change that issue , unless we play a sweeper god thats going back in time .
Wish I could have watched it to get a true feeling of there goals. But at least we didn't lose COYP

Timber goes straight back in. I understand you wanting to attribute the improved performance to this, but it was a much better pressing effort from everyone...more pressure on the ball higher up led to far move turnovers higher up the field. We didn't buy Timber to sit on the bench - he's a level above alongside Wharton there and should be instantly reinstated. For example, that second goal wouldn't have happened with Timber playing. Plus, Daichi is contributing far more at 10.

Agree, slightly deeper full backs definitely helped too.

Pino, I agree, is looking tasty. Really like the way he's combining with Khalali and Wharton.

We'll get there, I think.!

Much improved performance in terms of chances conceded. They really only had 2 and both could have been prevented - especially the first one when it was really 3 palace defenders v Ndihi. It looked liked Canvot started to track his run and but as the run was across the back line he left it for one of the others who got confused as Canvot had started to go but then didn't. That bit of hesitation meant he was in. This was one of those that goes down to having constant changes in defence. Going forward as they play regularly together ( and i think it will be Richards Desai and Canvot for some time ) the understanding will gel and these sort of errors should get cut out.
The second one was more a combination of minor mistakes - poor clearance and then some poor challenges / none challenges by the midfielders around the edge of the box.

On the whole a very pleasing result, with some optimism for further improvement

It’s interesting how three of our most highly criticised players (Mateta, Kamada and Yeremy) were highly praised last night and the frustration has moved on to the like of Disasi and JSL. The former aren’t perfect and the jury is still out on the latter but I do think players benefit from time playing in a team and role.

I’d start Disasi again on Sunday, despite the horrific/non existent marking on their first goal. Him in the centre, Richards on the right and one of the youngsters on the left might remain our least worst option and I hope they’ll benefit from time. Harsh on Lerma (though he’d probably come on) but I think we need some consistency there.

Yes we need to settle on a back 3 if we're sticking with that formation and I agree with the 3 last night. There are flaws but they need time to gel, although we have to accept they won't be as good as last year.
Tomiyasu and Lerma can provide cover. Not sure about the Italian lad, but in any event he won't be here next year.
Good last night but we need some consistency. Still unsure about Pierre but accept the options are limited.

I know I keep mentioning Chilwell but he's has played a few games in central defence (one in five games according to Wiki) and his experience could bring some benefits in organisation.

I agree. Plus he suits our system quite well. However, he is injury prone as are several of our players.
I have perused that Chilwell has never started a match as a left centre-back.He has on occasions been asked to tuck inside in a central tracking role when his team are out of possession but his official structural position has consistently been as a left-back or left wing-back.
A few years ago, Gary Neville opined that Chilwell is more accomplished going forward than defending.

The real aswer is to go 4 at the back and therefore have room for an extra midfield player. preferably one wth some ability on the ball compared to the 3 lumbering oafs in central defence who can't be entrusted with the ball at their feet. We have seen how trying to play out from the back leads to big problems, so avoid them altogether, and, as seems likely after yesterday's performance, utilise Mateta's worthiness to hold up the ball.
Essential point: do not have the back 3 doing tippy tappy nonsense between themselves at any stage.

Yes but he can, and has, played in central defence. My point is that he's a good and experienced defender so we should try to get some use out of him other than as a late replacement.

HOORAY, can you forward to Sage, asap. a post of sense, leaving a decent midfielder out for a poor central defender is mis-management of the highest level, Sage, adapt or sacked

Trying to evaluate yesterday’s performance, for sure having made 9 changes to the previous match, Besiktas were effectively playing their B team. The market odds changed markedly once the teams were announced and Palace were favourites to win the match at kickoff.

Drawing with the Besiktas B team is a start however and they did bring some of the regular first team on later in the match.

Small stepping stones. Thrilled with the draw and some goals especially Mateta! And I don’t care if he is playing for his move to Man Utd.

It was better but coming from such a low base that it was only ok. We didn’t look so wide open and didn’t conceded after 3 minutes but those should be basic expectations. A result that doesn’t get Sage sacked immediately but doesn’t put him out of danger either. Newcastle, even in their current form, will be a much stiffer test.

I think we can all see as well we ain’t going anywhere in the Europa League either. The depth of good teams is far too much for us
