Brighton vs Crystal Palace match thread

Sage’s high press looks more like a half arsed press to me. Only needs one player not to join in and the gaps will be exploited leaving the midfield and the wide areas open.

It’s a tactic that should only be carried out by in form, accomplished teams that are thoroughly schooled in it. When it works it’s great but it leaves us mightily exposed when we inevitably have a couple of players strolling to get involved and we do it half cocked.

It might be City relegated in addition to the other 3 worst clubs, then 4 come up from the Championship...
Premier League looks after their own. It will be 2 down as well as Citeh if they get a massive points deduction. If they are expelled though and the EFL won’t take them that won’t work and who knows what will happen!

Half arsed and half cocked? Lucky there's only one ball.

Mingueza is nowhere near the Spain team these days and looked even more inept than Khalaili in his two most recent outings. Khalaili is more of a winger than a wing back IMO. He has done OK going forward but neither he nor Mingueza are up to it defensively. Also, Khalaili cost us a significant fee, Mingueza just a signing on fee.
Mingueza played for Spain during covid when they had loads of withdrawals.

Eddie N has played for England (once).

Neither are anywhere near international standard

they'll have to apply to join a non-league organisation. Surely if the epl expel them then they don't have to concern themselves with whether the football league will take them, it's just not their problem anymore.

Yes, I was aware of that and was genuinely pleased that he came to us on a free. BUT, having seen him close up more than once he's been very disappointing in his defensive duties and defence was supposedly the stronger side to his game.

He's actually known for getting forward and providing excellent crosses and assists. I think it was his assists that got him in the europa team.

Believe he got a good assist in the Boro cup game for JSL.

However his performance on Thursday in Lyon means i don't feel confident in either Khalaili or Mingueza.

That was only one of his four caps - the whole U21 squad got nominated to play a senior game against Lithuania due to positive Covid tests amongst the senior players.

More recently, he played a couple of games for Spain last year, including starting in the Nations League final.

Khalaili looks miles off it to me - given his experience at a higher level, I think Mingueza is worth giving a few games to see how he gets on.

No real surprise that we were soundly thrashed by Brighton who are enjoying a purple patch and sit in third place.
But we must show some fight in our next game!!

if you argument is that he should be playing for us at RB/RWB as he's a Spanish international i'd politely disagree.

Based on what i've seen he looks quite limited and a Middlesboro reserve did him a couple of times in the league cup match.

A squad player at best IMHO

Simon Jordan on Talksport

Jordan defending parish this is a AI but he said give it 12 games . Keown as usual not a clue . No ideas what Sage should try and set up , lets go for the easy root and say nothing . I've forgotten the presenters name, but he is just going for headline statements to start a debate and not let people finish there view . Yes I know its edited but this is one of the biggest reasons I stopped listening to that station . It was good when Jordan mentioned we beat them 5-0 . Brighton cant crow about beating us for the 3rd time in 15

A tactic that has hardly ever worked in the Premier League. I can only think of Klopp that did it successfully and that took him several seasons to get right. He also had at the time arguably the best forward line in England in Salah, Mane and Firminio as well as arguably the best centre back in the world at the time in Van Dijk. Even then as soon as the balance was slightly off the following season the high press stopped working.

Why would a manager taking on a limited squad try and play a system that has hardly ever worked in the Premier League?
Agreed and this is key for me.

When you play a high press you need centre backs who are both good in the air and also have the recovery pace. We had Guehi and Lacroix who both scored well on these attributes. The replacements do not. Additionally, Canvot is weak in the air and arguably our quickest defender (Riad) is out long term.

Put all this together and we do not have the team to be able to play a high press in my opinion.
