Lyon away - Europa league

We're in the league cup. 12th in the league, and 8th in the Europa league table. Objectively thats pretty good no?

Yeah it’s absolutely fine Robbo and nowhere near being under threat as of yet.

I’m more referencing the games where we look like we don’t have a defence, even Forest felt as though we could have conceded 8 first half, and the intense fixture list.

Can conjure up images of complete disaster for those of us more inclined toward bedwetting.

Some of the comments on this thread…. We’ve just narrowly lost away to Lyon, an established European club.

Poor first half, but on balance we deserved a draw which we likely would have got had it not been for a refereeing howler against Kamada.

We have a new manager who has never managed in England. Give the bloke a chance. On the whole, we’ve had a decent start. Just need to get a settled back 3 and we’ll look decent.

It was tongue in cheek… anyways. ))
On to more important matters, does anyone genuinely believe that Sage can turn this defensive nightmare around? Because I don’t.
I'm glad you have found your sense of humour and yes I think he will find the balance of defence and attack .
He hasn't been helped with our dealings in the summer , Riad now unfortunately out and Canvot were supposed to be for the future not the present .Honest is an odd loan when you need experienced centre backs ,Tomiyasu cant stay fit and Richards form has always been in and out . Disasi hasn't impressed.

Not exactly the best deck to deal from is it ? For now just enjoy the ride and hopefully in January we can add a couple of aces .

Agreed.

It will take time for Sage to get a settled back 3 for the PL and one for the Cups. It's a shame but not really a surprise that Tomiyasu is still fragile as, for me he's the best CB we have. He reads the game so well, and we really need him as the RCB to bolster up that side where IMO both the RWB options are weak defensively, although I think Khalaili will improve over the season.

Still early days and I can see more negative vibes on this forum with 2 tough away games coming up. Tonight wasn't a case of us being hammered as was happening for 40 minutes on Sunday. We showed we can compete with the stronger sides in this competition and I expect us to qualify, although it may require us to get through to the last 16 via the play-off round.

According to the weird BBC scoring system Kamada was Man of the Match and we had six players with higher scores than any of theirs.
The weird BBC scoring system is simply the average marks out of 10 given by those who vote on the website - anyone who has a BBC account can vote, and those that do are generally fans of the club whose players they are marking.

So generally the marks for Palace players are produced by Palace fans.

We were totally inept defensively against Nottm Forest and could have conceded 4 or more goals. Tonight we conceded 3 goals, such defensive frailties are not acceptable. Unless these issues are resolved in short order, not only will will we plummet down the table questions will be raised as to whether Pierre Sage is suitable for the job.

Sage would be wise to take a page from the playbook of American football coaches and have a separate "defensive coordinator" to organize the chaos in the back.

My first step would be to move our superb 1-v-1 defender Tyrick Mitchell to the back line and put someone/anyone else at wingback. Yes, Tyrick has grown into the attack role, and, yes, his fitness is an asset as a wing back, but his defensive prowess is sorely needed at the back of the pitch.

Makes sense. Particularly in European games.

Compared to Forest i think we conceded way less chance against Lyon. The first one from the corner was one of those where the bounce off Canvot's shoulder could have gone anywhere and fell nicely for their player to clear the mass of players between him and the goal. Second goal was well worked but we should have been more awake. Third goal could have been avoided if Desai had stepped up. Otherwise we were rarely opened up. Felt it was more in line with the performance against Leeds and felt we deserved a share of the points.
Good to get 60 minutes out of Sarr who will benefit for the game. Wharton looked good. Need to look at rotating Wharton and Timber as well as Mitchell as they will be burnt out come the middle of winter. Mateta is back in training and he will both give an alternative to JSL once he is up to speed.

Prior to the game yesterday I raised concerns about our defending, accordingly it came as no surprise to me that we conceded 3 goals.
An abject defeat against Brighton on the back of a flurry of goals will I suspect be the catalyst for debate apropos the future of Pierre Sage.
Some supporters with whom I have been in conversation are far from convinced that he is the man for the job and they expressed such sentiments when he was appointed.

It's almost as if some want him to fail so they can go into " I told you so " mode

Cobblers

I certainly do not wish for Sage to fail for obvious reasons. There are however those who have been consistent in their messaging to me that he is not the man for the job and I suspect."I told you so" mode will be activated should events conspire in the direction they expect.

You’ve been questioning Sage since the day he was appointed. Negative, unnecessary and ignoring the difficult job the man has faced. We were unlucky yesterday and yet you still vilify him….

With respect, I have consistenty stated that I dearly wish him every.success and I haven't showered him with vilification.
I did however highlight the fact that whilst he has extensive coaching experience and spells as a No 2, he has relative inexperience as a manager in the 'Top seat' and the PL can be unforgiving. As someone said to me, a single impressive season in France does not mean that he is suited to the job in difficult circumstances.
I have had reservations about Pierre Sage but I wish him well.I certainly hope my fears do not become reality.

I am actually content to give Sage some time to see if his courageous style of football can succeed. However, one needs a settled and organised back three and Sage has not had that once this season in his defence. Interested to know which successful sides are playing his style of football, maybe PSG and Bayern Munich but they have world class players and we don’t.
