Do you go to that Brighton Wetherspoons?

I made the mistake a couple of years ago of going to that Wetherspoons pub (the Brighthelm is it?) and then being marched the long way up to the station round the back streets by 100 Robocops while the locals made w@nker signs at me. It was all a big pantomime and I won't be making that mistake again. Let's be honest, if you don't act like a cretin you can go and watch Palace at Brighton without any hassle (apart from being kept back at the end) and you don't have to be part of that performative bollox...

There are some to stay out of but their prices are extraordinary - last week in Glasgow 1 pint of bitter, 1 pint of lager and a pint of soda water & lime (mate is in AA) came to £6.05.
And there's a 'spoons near Central Station called The Crystal Palace. Who could resist?
I also thought their hotels were supposed to be good.

Depressing places full of Wetherspoonites ( welfare recipients who manage to scrounge enough to drink, gamble and smoke all day.) Went to The George in Croydon before a game once. Everyone in there seemed to be Special Needs. Wouldn’t set foot in there again even if the beer is free !

That's the difference in Scotland - the pubs the ne'er-do-wells go to are a lot more "earthy" than Wetherspoons. Here's a Glasgow example.

The biggest problem is that in most of them you need an Uber to get to the Gents. After a certain age by the time you get back you need to go again.
Ours being an old police station there’s actually a table in each of the old cells, I know this because I get dragged in there Boxing Day morning for a traditional family Boxing Day breakfast, you can even look through the old railings on the door

That pub, known locally as “The Vomit”,closed in 1991, featured in a music video for Robson and Jerome in 1996 (What becomes of the broken hearted) and was demolished in 2009.
Scottish pubs have improved but certainly are drinking dens and not a patch on some of the lovely village pubs I sampled in the Dales this week!
