Unfunny 'comedy'

Frazier and Seinfeld!! How many seasons of that unfunny rubbish is there?? I suppose Americans obviously find them funny
How many seasons is actually the nail on the head.

Even if America managed to produce a good comedy, most good comedy survives 2 series maximum. After that the sit outweighs the com in sitcom. You'll have all of the 4-16 main characters dating each other in some kind of weird "we only date co-workers" world and it just falls to sh*t.

Ricky Gervais (like or loathe him) rightly said, two seasons is the magic number for any comedy.

No seasons would be better for his cartoon one.

I think Ricky Gervais has it pretty much nailed in the comedy department himself

Some of the funniest things I’ve watched on YouTube are bloopers and outtakes of his various shows, he must be a nightmare in a good way to work with 🤣

Yeah he's made some dross, but it doesn't stop him being right.

There are some exceptions. Personally thought Dad's Army and Red Dwarf survived beyond a second season for example. But these days quit after 2.
On this The Office is still miles ahead of the US office. His one with Doc Brown isn't bad either. Although it's a sign of the times that the US office is more popular.

The US Office is more popular because some people want a load of romance mixed with farce. It's nowhere near as funny but inoffensive (by which I mean you can watch it and not detest it). I quite like the US Office but it's not comparable. They didn't understand the irony of David Brent really but that's fine.

Some of the cartoon 'comedy' is truly unfunny. Bobs Burgers and King of the Hill to name 2.

I don't think I've ever even cracked a smile at either.

I do like the Simpsons (although should have stopped after season 10) and Family Guy.

Was never into South Park, although i can see how some people like it.

I know dads army is a British institution, but apart from when I was a kid when it was originally aired when I found some of it funny, as an adult watching re-runs it feels like it was very overrated. Or maybe it’s just because the humour is dated now

It wasn't laugh out loud funny, but I think that's why I liked it. It wasn't trying to be. As has been implied on this thread, too many things strive to be wall to wall funny now which falls far short of the mark. I have to admit I still watch Dad's Army via a box set from start to finish and have done about twenty times.

Personally loved King of the Hill. The premise of an innocently bigoted redneck in a surrounding where that was generally tolerated was quite funny to me.

I think what made it was it had some great characters, having said I struggle to watch it now, Frazer is still one of my all time favourite comedy characters

This goes to show how our perceptions are different. I hated Frazer so much. I felt like he was mean spirited and downright nasty. I mean, ok, that was the point really but I just longed for his come-uppence. It happened three times thankfully.

When he found out Godfrey had won medals as a medic and wasn't just a conchy

When he refused to play the bagpipes only to find Mainwairing was an incredibly competent bagpipe player.

When he was briefly put in charge if the platoon.

I think that was why I found him so funny. In the same way I always loved Victor Meldrew……who my Mrs says I’ve turned into btw 😇

Victor Meldrew absolutely. The thing is, he wasn't wrong. A load of sh*t things happened and he was both astounded and annoyed. I have never been able to see why he was painted as being a grump. His Mrs was the grump not him.
