1066....Britain got taken by 12,000 men in small boats

The takeover had really begun many decades before that fateful day in October. A slow stealthy takeover through marriages and alliances.

Also many religious deals had been done in the background. With some big religious authorities being broadly approving of the invasion. The little old English church got supplanted by a hostile takeover too. All the old priests attacked, many churches burned, and a new State-approved religion implemented.

Evidence pointing to Harold using boats to get down there now. Never seemed possible to get down there so quickly.
its funny that today we often regard the sea as a barrier. In the past it was a highway. Easier to get from Newcastle to Pevensey by sea than marching a whole army on foot.

As mentioned above, the English Court had already gone over to the Norman side. Edward the Confessor was more Norman than English. The link below is his mother.

After 1067 the North of England was a wasteland. A total kip filled with unemployment and unproductive elements.

12,000 men is the most generous estimate of William the Ba.st@rd's army. I.e. The Holmesdale plus the Arthur Waite. Similar to our FA Cup win, it was the quality of the warriors more than the quantity.

Along with the Saxons having fought up north three weeks before.

Saxons? King Harold Godwinson? Yes, though his line was Scandinavian iirc.

He was fighting his Dane cousin Harold Hardrada, and brother Tostig Godwinson up there.

And William was directly descended from Rollo, Duke of North man - Nor-man - Normandy
