positive attitude

I like that if a player drops below his levels they’re dropped, Canvot being the obvious example, he was awful against Fulham and was right to be dropped. Canvot is far to casual for me, even comes across as lazy sometimes so it’s refreshing that a manager is not scared to drop anyone

100%.

If it works, McNeil being the clearest example, you have a player fired up to prove their worth.

If not, well, thats fine also. We've got a big enough squad.

It'll be interesting to see if Sage is concerned with attitude or performance level, as the two aren't always the same thing.

There was some clickbait crap floating around after he left Canvot out the other week. The player is now back in the side which suggests the manager is happy with his attitude but, for me, his performances are still miles off it.

Go back to the Forest game. The 1st half header that Benetiz saves comes about because Canvot got caught trying to run the ball out from the back when he should have just passed it long. Poor decision making on the ball.

The bits I think the coaches will be focusing on, though, are less-obvious.

Have a look back at when Delap blasts that chance straight at Benetiz (who deserves full credit for the save anyway). Canvot is perhaps a little slow to get out to Gibbs White, who makes the most of the chance to get his head up and pick his spot. That's not the main thing, though. As the ball comes back off the bar Canvot is stood on the edge of the box, like a statue, as all the action unfolds. Literally doesn't move until the ball goes out for a corner. He couldn't have got back to the goal in time to help, but he didn't know that. Defenders are supposed to sense danger and naturally seek to address it. Canvot just went inactive at the key moment.

2nd half, when they hit the post from a corner, the ball ends up looping up the air. Murillo comes charging in like a rhino and, thankfully, heads it straight at Benetiz. Canvot is the nearest and is well placed to challenge for the header, but he doesn't even jump. I'm not saying he bottled it, but he might as well not have been there. He is one of our centre backs! If he isn't going to challenge for key headers then why is he there? He then completely lost Chris Wood for his header at the end that, again, fortunately went straight at Benetiz.

Obviously, Canvot is young and has potential, etc and so on. Also, obviously lots of other players made a lot of errors too. Lerma was an accident waiting to happen (again), for instance.

I am focussing on Canvot because he was one of the players Sage left out because he wasn't happy with him.

I wonder if he is happier now? Will he leave him out again? When he drops a player who then comes back in and plays well, the decision is immediately vindicated. It's cases like that of Canvot that will test the Sage approach.

When we were kids if you had a bad game for the school team you risked getting dropped. Should these overpaid prima donas be any different? If they don’t like it they can #### off. I like what Sage is doing. Sorting out the real men who want to play for the Palace and will take responsibility for themselves and their performances. I can’t believe some on here have questioned the manager for this.

Agree, Would explain the disappearance of Guessand!

i do not think sage has a choice we do not have any body else than canvot to play in position
I be tempted to start Ahanor and try Canvot in holding midfield. We lack cover in holding midfield more than any other position. We'd be relying on at least one of Timber or Wharton playing every match unless we can honestly use Hughes or Lerma there much. And I believe Lerma has been playing well at centre back and we should perhaps consider that his position. I think it suits him with his poor passing and pretty good aerial ability. As for Hughes, one of my favourites but realistic, good starting option? Unfortunately, I think our team is much weaker if we use Lerma or Hughes in the holding midfield position. Our clear two are Wharton and Timber.
I do wonder how Canvot would do. He likes to dribble, he can clearly tackle, his passing isn't great but he's still probably a better passer than Lerma. Also, if he lost the ball in midfield, it's nothing like losing it in the back three.

Its 100% right to focus on these things. And Sage and co will be working on getting these issues fixed.

And if he cant improve in these areas he's going to get dropped again.

Is it bravery? Or instinct? There seams to be a lot of times where he seams to be ball watching or waiting for someone else to take command.

He defiantly has an issue aerially where he has to react quickly.

I was going to writer something similar earlier. Canvot basically doesn't seem to want or know when to try and head the ball in defence. He's caught out time and again in the air. He can actually pass IMO and he has that ability to drive forward with the ball and, as you say, less risky for him doing that as a DM than a CB. As for Lerma, I believe Sage sees him as a CB and not a DM.

PS Perhaps we ought to move this conversation to the Canvot thread.

Agreed. I've said it before but for me he's a bit typical of a modern 'academy' youngster in that he trusts himself with the ball to feet and wants to play, but isn't obviously a natural defender in the old school ways. That's especially true in the air. He seems to get shorter when he jumps!

We've all seen talented youngsters develop into top players at palace in recent years and perhaps Canvot will do so. It is worth remembering, though, that Eze, Guehi, Olise, and Wharton had all played two or three times as many senior games as Canvot had before signing for Palace, and in most cases had also been in and out at their respective championship clubs for at least two years. They were a bit more road tested and a bit further along the learning curve than Canvot. We jumped in for him after only 18 senior games in France, and very early in his development.

All signings are a gamble, but he was perhaps a riskier one than those successful players were.

If Decoure is back to 90% that solves this problem.

Nicely put , people also tend to remember the finished Guehi and Lacroix , they blanked there early games for us , when they made mistakes and more often than not played like statues with crosses and still did .
I see more good than bad in him if he starts winning headers before the age of 22 I will be more than happy , and by age of 24 he is more or less served his apprenticeship ,
I was a defender so I watch what the defence does more than the attack .

What's happened to Mingueza? He seems to have dropped out of contention.

Although he started as a CB at Barca he spent the last 3 years at Celta Vigo mainly as a wing-back. He's currently vying with Khalaili for the RWB position. I watched the friendly against Bristol City and IMO he didn't cover himself in glory (hardly anyone did) so probably didn't do enough to persuade Sage to play him instead of the Israeli. Sage has stressed that he needs the full squad so as to manage minutes for players over this long season (a minimum 49 games for us) so I expect Mingueza to feature at some point.
