I was watching MOTD this evening and Sky Sports News earlier. In one sense I can understand why the Man City players and the manager are saying "we'll stick to the football and celebrate our on pitch achievements; anything else is out of our control."
But I felt watching them lord it at Anfield today very much missed the mood music. Those on pitch achievements stem from costly acquisitions which almost certainly were sourced by illegitimate uses of funds - allegedly and subject to appeal. The laps of honour and mutual back slapping today were nauseating.
I can only really think of one domestic example which seems comparable to me. That was Swindon in 1990. Overseas, Juventus corrupted referees and fixed matches: there is a suspicion at least that certain officials like Michael Oliver were paid for UAE officiating gigs and likely by the same stakeholders as those who own Man City.
In both the Swindon and the Juve cases a relegation was enforced. I would fully expect the same here for Man City alongside severe sanctions (confiscation of the club?) for the owners.
