France is a Kip

I think 1968 was the end of De Gaulle politically so it is important, partucularly due to his dismissive attitude to the students and french workers.

His autocratic style was dated and he looked out of touch, his presidency only lasted a few more months and he died the following year in 1970.

😎

Potentially an interesting day in France today. A national 'Day of Action' in support of the students.

LOL. Madame Le Pen says 'Merci!'

Last year I was heading to Paris airport on the morning of the " Block everything " riots. Every junction in the city centre had riot police, fire services, ambulances waiting for it to kick off. We arrived at the airport less than an hour before it kicked off. Many flights after ours cancelled as airport workers, crew etc couldn't get to the airport.

The French have what they wanted, karma.

In Spain, Sanchez call a snap election because of his current housing policy's seem pants, rioting was been going on in Madrid, it started when an 87 years old woman, who had rented in the same house for 70 years, had been evicted, because the Landlord tried to raise the rent by 300%, she has been put back into her house and the Landlords house has been burnt down, most of the Spanish people my age yearn for the return of Franco, Spain have had a Socialist coalition since 1975

That may be difficult, isn’t he dead?

As you walked out one midsummer morning.

It certainly looks interesting but another coalition will be the outcome, likely this time on the right, with the centre right dominant with the far right as their partners. Something Badenoch has ruled out here only today.

Sanchez has presided over excellent growth whilst still developing social care. He has shown other democratic leaders the way to be honest with Trump and Netanyahu. The inevitable cost has been strongly rising house prices. So he is likely to be in opposition for a while. Until the right show they have no actual solution. Words don’t build houses. Ex pats, British ones included, will though be easy targets for tax increases and residency restrictions.

The Spanish economic success is an EU mirage. It is built on tourism, high-value services, huge migration, and EU recovery funds. When three out of the four economic drivers are beyond your control, that isn't a recipe for sustainable success. Especially when you consider that the lack of housing is being blamed on tourists and immigrants (of course, neither is that actual problem, which is no one builds homes in Spain), you end up in a situation where your economic drivers are causing your primary political problems.

The other strange thing about Spain is how low their per capita GDP is, they are about $20,000 behind the UK per person.

Spain , like italy, has hundreds of thousands of dead villages. Google 'Empty spain' Eagle.

Housing crisis is all fake. Its economic structural change gone rogue. Same in uk. U cannot get affordable housing near london , meanwhile u can buy a dead street in a dead town for a fiver.

Upcoming Strike Warning: While today is clear, five major French aviation unions have filed a notice for a massive 5-day nationwide flight crew strike from October 17–21, 2026. If your travel falls in that window, expect severe disruptions and widespread cancellations on Air France, Transavia, and other French-regulated carriers.

Those cheeky French

EU Utopia for you - we should rejoin at once.

Those dead villages are dead for a reason, no jobs and no future. They aren't connected to public transportation so people cannot work somewhere else and the commute back home as Europeans just don't have the same car culture as Americans do outside of western Germany and parts of the UK.

And while those abandoned villages are fun to stroll through, they are run own and require a massive amount of work to renovate them. The average cost for the renovations on those $1 homes goes from $25,000 -$120,000 for the cheap and half a million if you go nuts with it. So on paper they look great, but they don't function for most people, especially if they have kids. You primarily see remote workers (F'n you tubers) or Expats* who buy those homes because they just aren't realistic for most people to have a day job and raise a family.

* - Side note. A couple of years ago I was walking in Northern Spain and ended up having dinner with a Brit expat who was repairing a $1 house and had broke his ankle that day. Guy was hilarious, both absolutely brilliant but mentally scatterbrained as only a genius can be. Gave me some great advice on going to Finisterre instead of Muxia and he was spot on.
