Crystal Palace welcome Bristol City for a friendly

Meaningless friendly, good for people to take the kids and for those who can’t usually get or afford tickets and to give the players left behind a run out, so surely there’s not going to be a mass debate over this one, it’s basically an open training session

So, we now have a bigger squad to enable us to compete in all our competitions over the season only to discover these players on the sidelines aren’t that good. We would get relegated from the championship with that 11 that started today :-( Was also surprised how poor Mitchell was? Wharton again looked poor as did Chilwell who gave the ball away to often. Yes, it was a needed runout but also showed how lacking we are in quality other than those away on international duty. So annoyed that it’s pissing down with rain on my holiday in Turkey that I then had the opportunity to watch us lose. Grrrr!

The tactics were basically Glasner with more forward passes. But we couldn't defend either. And we are not high pressing, nor look likely to be able to. We're going to have to recognise that we don't have the players for the high press, or anything much involving pace - which we lack.

Bad Deja Vu, or Groundhog day?

You lot need to give your heads a wobble🤣 it means absolutely nothing
True, but we didn't really look good. Doucoure looked ok, is a positive. The improvised defence did not work with Chilwell in the three. Up front, normal service of poor choices, poor final ball and lack of any composure when shooting. One of only a couple of times I've seen Mitchell disinterested. I hope he's not thinking of jumping ship. It was a strong enough line up to trouble a league side. But we didn't really except in spells. Even then - unconvincing.

We were missing Henderson, Richards, Canvot, Kalaili, Timber, Sarr, Mateta, Kamada and Pino. That’s 8/11
The only positive for me was Doucore who looked sharp if a bit heavy. It was not a great performance and unless we can play our best team a lot, we will struggle big time.

Many of these squad players looked very poor actually.

One can only hope that the international players can stay fit for us for most of the season. Hughes -‘ legs have gone. Guessand was awful, McNeill slightly better.

Same as so many matches we've watched. I don't see the point in the three if we just get ran through the channels on the break constantly. We looked like we had one in defence half the time as we constantly give the ball away very quickly and catch ourselves out. Hopefully, we'll be miles better in a real game.

Yes , this performance will get the kids screaming to come back for more.

I didn't watch the game but it sounds like we should have played this behind closed doors and without any video evidence of it occurring.

Not a great sign that our backups don't seem to offer much.

Just got back and as the previous posts there wasn't really a lot of positives except some minutes for Doucoure and a minor first team debut for Nascimento. I guess a well done for his start to the season in the U21s. Still a chance to give the squad match fitness and a good effort from the club to get the kids in for free. At least they could have a look at the 3 trophies on display before the start.

A reminder to Sage that we are still pretty inept at defending a set piece. Not that he should need reminding. And not a good idea to give away unnecessary free kicks around the penalty area.

But we didn't get caught playing out from the back. But then again Bristol City didn't go really hard at the high press. They concentrated on keeping the midfield congested and we couldn't play through and they were combative and sharp in the middle and seemed to win every 50/50 duel. So we resorted to trying to play longer balls to Nketiah for most of the first half. And even if you didn't see the game you can imagine how well that worked out.

Second half we did eventually manage to open them up a few times on the right with McNeil and Mingueza but they were making a lot of subs so that might be the reason we found more space. The shooting opportunities that came from the better play were squandered poorly. Guessand being the main culprit. Wharton's radar a bit off. McNeil was tracking back and making an effort. But he does tend to lose the ball when the full back has gone past him so we are then totally open.

Still didn't have anything else planned for today so I'll take only having spent £7.50 to watch that as a small positive.

Thought our keeper was stuck on his line for the first goal. He had plenty of time to move and either catch or punch the ball away? As for second goal, giving the free kick away in such a dangerous position was unacceptable and then our keeper was too far to one side to save it. Will give him the benefit of the doubt on that one but not the first goal :-(
