Main Stand redevelopment thread

This is what I don't get. The building of the stand is separate from the FFP/CSR malarchy, so why don't these investors want to generate more income/improve the future of their investment!? Wrexham's Hollywood owners are doing it and they're certainly not as affluent as our American lot.
Wrexham needed a new stand to be able to function in the Premier League and Europe. Palace don't (technically) and in any event our investors are just that - investors looking to make a profit on their investment. Financing the new stand wouldn't see any return on the investment for probably fifteen years. at the earliest. I don't see the likes of Harris, Blitzer and Johnson wanting to remain committed for that length of time. They may possibly choose to provide some finance to ensure the stand gets built but by no means the bulk of the money required.

I get your point, but it also raises the image and status of the club. There would also be extra revenue that comes with corporate events, hospitality, functions, new amenities, parking etc etc (not just money made from extra tickets sold). If it were me and my billions I would like to get involved more and take a bit of pride in what I'm doing - but yeah I might be looking at it from a fans point of view (which they kind of should be anyways if they've put their money into the club, or maybe they're just emotionally detached from it all!?)

So he’s now saying (article in the Athletic) that the finance isn’t in place - it was but some of that has been spent on the team (!) and costs have continued to rise more than they planned for. Re-development will now be in stages to help spread the cost out. And they’ve binned the original project management company. None of this fills me with much confidence.
The longer the project is dragged out, the more expensive it is likely to be. Inflation is rarely negative and the cost of materials and labour are very unlikely to get cheaper.

The cost of building is always paid for in instalments linked to the different stages of the build, so I don't see what is new about any of this.

I agree, what is the point of Harris,Blitzer and Johnson if they are not going to put some of their money in to the stadium re-build.

Indeed.

I'm sure they are useful, and Parish talks about money coming in from them.

But given this is outside of PSR you'd hope that our owners were passionate enough to just bank roll it. Given the combined net worth of lots of billions, a couple of hundred mill is chump change.

But clearly its not a project of passion, or love, it must just make sense financially. Do they ever attend?

Why shouldn't the council demand that ?
Did I say they shouldn't? Mind you it could be argued that the public highway is not the club's responsibility and the current lay out may very well be perfectly acceptable and the council see a way of getting some road works done for free. I didn't argue that though because I dont know the facts.

I could have said that but I didn't

It doesnt matter what the clubs responsibility is. The council work for their residents, if they give the green light for a big development, that impacts the daily lives of people for the next 3 years, its their job to ensure the residents benefit from it somehow.

Mad aint it.

I got quoted 80k recently. For a loft conversion adding 2 small doubles and bathroom. 80k!

Yep. The prices are a bit spiteful now. Would be done in 12/16 weeks aswell.

The materials went up massively during Covid, due to a lack of supply. Obviously they haven’t come back down.

Wrexham's stand will cost approximately £70 Mill with £18 Mill provided as a grant by Wrexham Council.
Our stand will cost significantly more.

I have seen wrexham stand its a smaller version of the holmesdale so the cost is alot less and wrexham has to compete with Liverpool and Everton and possibly manu for supporters , also it backs onto the railway track so not residential

To be fair Brighton's stadium only holds 30,000 capacity and I'm told only one stand has anything that resembles luxury. The rest of the stadium is probably like the Holmesdale concourses. Nothing wrong with that but the whole point of our new Main Stand is its going to bring in a lot of corporate money. To do that involves VIP boxes, Restaurants, all sorts of other corporate entertainment, etc, etc. This, coupled with spiralling building costs, coupled with London prices, coupled with a greedy unhelpful council that want Palace to pay for all new pavements, signage and pedestrian crossings AND pay them for the privilege I'd imagine the costs are on a different planet and can 100% believe the cost of a Main Stand in London could end up more than a basic design 30k stadium on brown land in Brighton will be higher

It's also built to be quiet, yes that's true. Small ends and non reflective acoustics, part of the permission

In the interview he says funding hasn't been secured but it doesn’t mean they wont get funding. Seems the club have changed project managers to try and get the price down, once these plans are finalised im sure they will secure the funding.

I wouldn’t be surprised if H&B were saving their dollars and cents to buy Man City if the Regulator bans the current owners. They wanted to buy Chelsea but were pipped by Boehly. Palace would need to be sold and it would be up to any new owner to continue redevelopment. More uncertainty!

It will finish up with two more rows of seats and a McDonalds franchise the way it’s going.

On a serious note, the change in cost to more than double the original estimate is rather concerning. It wasn’t too long ago you could build an entire new stadium for that sort of money.

One thing for sure is they better allow at least 20% for contingencies because it could increase by that amount during construction.

What pisses me off is that the Club has demolished the Stanley Stephenson lounge and they’re now bleating about money to get the stand rebuilt. That’s all very well but where am I supposed to drink at half time and after the game? I paid for a lounge bar as well as a seat and was then told about this on the eve of the new season. Disingenuous and disrespectful of the Club. As for getting served in the Wright and Bright bar it’s rammed…..
