Adam Wharton

Goals are the only thing missing from his game. He is exceptional in everything else he does. If Wharton scored goals with regularity someone would have made an offer impossible to refuse over the summer.
As it stands Real Madrid, City and Liverpool have him watched regularly
We all know his vision, his outstanding quality on the ball and he is a vital cog in our midfield wheel.
What he lacks is the athleticism of some of the top midfielders and of course he needs to add goals to his game.

What do our coaches actually do ? Do they just work on fitness and tactics ? I’d like to know someone is working with Wharton on his shooting, with JSL on his hold up play, with all our players on crosses, with all our players on stop shoving guys in the back giving away needless fouls, with Disasi on not crossing the halfway line as he leaves acres of space behind him for the opposition to exploit on the counter. I bet in 3 weeks none of these things will have improved.

Is three weeks enough time to learn basic skills these players have built careers without having? Or if they have them not exhibited.
As for Wharton's shooting we'd be better off telling him to abandon all efforts and just try to pass the ball into the net. Not to compare the two but that worked for Jimmy Greaves.

Ah nothing mate. They just sit around smoking and complaining about Whartons shooting.

It's not a golf swing were you can teach them the right line of the club by holding and correcting , some people can shoot some cant , they have all been shown how to but there feet at a young age , not everyone is a Ambrose

I’m not sure that’s true. David Beckham and others have claimed to practice shooting and crossing alone for hours after training . If you’re correct then they were wasting their time. I’m not suggesting Wharton could become as good as Beckham but he could improve on his current performance with practice.

Re scoring goals, he clearly gets over excited just as he shoots. He should instead imagine the top corner of the goal is a 30 yard pass through to a forward and the ball would glide in. Basically don’t kick it too hard.
That’s my tip to Adam anyway

But they already had the ability they practice different shots just like you do in golf , Wharton doesn't bend the ball naturally , he slots the ball through watch pino he bends a pass , so I stand by what I have said , I have tried to teach kids how to shot and using both feet , they try and try but can only get it right on the very odd occasion

I'm not sure he does need to add goals to his game, they would be great but he's a deep-lying midfielder.

Look at Busquets, Modric and now Pedri. Their game wasn't goals. Wharton's job is to control the game, break lines, play through pressure and create chances.

Assists I slightly agree on but if you watch the most recent highlight reel Palace posted. There are so many passes where he's put the ball into dangerous areas and created chances that really should have resulted in assists. If our players were finishing more of them, his assist numbers would already look a lot better.

Unfortunately for us, once he does make the move and is playing with better players who can consistently finish those chances, I think the assists will naturally follow.

I agree completely, he can’t be everything and everywhere. He is totally different to Lampard or Gerrard. And they couldn’t play the balls he does. He is a visionary world class footballer who will elevate even more when he moves to a top level team with great players around him. We just need to enjoy him while we can. Carry on just the way you are Adam!
