about the year 1900, the Autumn food-harvest would employ hundreds of men from every village. Today its done by one Tractor, one combine-harvester and maybe a computer. Europe has many villages that died or got abandoned.

Imagine a whole city centre full of offices. Bureaucrats pushing paper around filing cabinets. Now imagine replacing every 100 staff with only 3 or 4 technocrats using AI. Terrifying isn't it ? Especially when the geography of the job has been lost. Replace city centres with Data centres located on the Orkney Islands or County Donegal - Data centres like a cool climate. Slough has benefitted massively.

Britain's Coal/steel/linen towns all died. Got replaced by dole towns. Places with nothing but problems. Now rinse & repeat for information towns.

Detroit stopped making cars and died. Will the City of London similarly die ? I believe its death started in earnest just before the Covid. London house prices will never get back to their insane levels. Why pay big money ? when your cottage on the Orkneys was cheap ? Fly into Gatwick, for an office-meeting, once a month. Stay at a Travel-lodge with Alan Partridge. Work from home in your Orkney pyjamas.

Danh I was being serious. You are in the field I believe. I know the terminator isn’t coming but metaphorically could this have merit. It frightens me and I’m nearly 60 so is it possible the youngsters of today could have their futures affected.
If one of your employees came to you worried, like me would you be so flippant ?

It’s a useful tool. As long as you know what it can and can’t do. It’s not taking your job.

It's a valid point but is only part of the issue - technology will replace loads of jobs. The construction industry will need considerably less manpower, there are already busses and cars to replace cab drivers, drone deliveries will become more common. Who needs waiters when it's a job that can be done equally efficiently by a basic robot? All it's doing is taking an order and delivering plates which would at least end the need for tipping. How hard is it to imagine an automated pub? Self service checkouts have replaced lots of staff as have self check ins at airports and ticket machines at stations. Card payments are replacing cash so there's less requirement to transport money, fill ATMs etc, banks don't need as many staff. Built in obsolescence means less repair work. How many jobs will there actually be, if not tomorrow at least in the not so distant future?

Technology can or will be able to do all these things. Whether human beings want them to though with sufficient demand is another matter entirely.

Yep. You see a lot of kick back to technological advancements in a lot of product markets. Vinyl and CD sales the highest they’ve been for about 20 years as one example.

Not my job. Robots would do more than me 👌😆. More the future in general. Put a couple of lines in co pilot and you are Shakespeare and that’s the basic AI.
Have you ever watched a film called
The Seed. That’s from years ago and could be where we are going scarily !
 
It is already starting to automate company processes. It can do all the work with a simple prompt. Soon the prompt won't be needed anymore.

Perhaps we may end up in a "utopia" world where no one works and the whole world is run on AI.

To my point about AI automating a company. Take UK energy provider Octopus as an example:


Where the AI answers questions from customers. Although you can always speak to a person the AI is the first line. Who knows maybe when it gets smart enough the need for the second line the person won't be needed anymore?

Basically moving to an "AI agent"

Some companies are embedding autonomous AI agents directly into standard corporate CRM databases. Effectively it is paving the way for entire company processes to run completely on AI.

How is this ‘automating a company’?

It’s automating a very specific small part of a huge energy business. Chatbots are nothing new. Most consumers would still rather speak to a human being.

Once agents sit inside the CRM and handle end to end workflows, more of the operating model becomes automated. That’s how a company will move from simple “AI assisting” to it running large parts of the business and its processes on AI.
