Guessand

Already feeling like a bad loan deal.
Agree, although I'm biased as I didn't want him in the first place.

He has Pino, Sarr, Osorio and McNeil and probably Nketiah ahead of him for the two Number 10 positions, and Mateta and Larsen ahead and probably Nketiah ahead of him for the central role ( not that Guessand looks at home there anyway).

That’s why it was a bad loan deal from day one. If he was much better than what we had then fine. If he filled a position we were short on then also fine. He does neither.

I actually think Guessand is more effective than Pino, McNeil, Strand Larsen and Nketiah. All of them have terrible stats and haven't exactly done anything for us. In fairness, two are English qualified - which is probably why they're in.

I acknowledge that many of us see players differently, but what do you see as his strengths?
For me he looks sluggish with no real pace or thrust, and despite his powerful physique, he doesn't display strength in physical duels.
He can beat an opponent with a sidestep, but can't seem to get away from them.
His link up play is wayward and he's not a strong header of the ball.
I'm really struggling to see what he brings to the team.

Disagree completely with it being a bad loan deal.

Did a good job for us last season and we missed him when he was injured. Nektiah will probably be injured after the Fulham game after slipping on a crisp packet going into Craven Cottage, Sarr is sulking and Mateta is "injured" until October. Osario we know nothing about with no prem experience. Pino still gets pushed off the ball far too easily and I'm starting to think he's just not cut out for the prem. Good freekick on Friday, but it hit the bar and could of easily bounced out. McNeil, looks ok but not seen enough of him to know.

Given that we could have lost Mateta and Sarr during the window, I for one wouldn't have wanted to rely on an injury prone Nketiah, McNeil who is ok and Pino who get's muscled out of games (Osario obviously last minute deal and completely unproven). So at the time of signing Guessand, we looked like we might need cover and he's not a bad player to bring on off the bench to mix things up a bit.

Did he? Scored against Wolves but was mostly completely ineffective. Even if we lost Sarr we still had Pino, McNeil, Nketiah and Gozo. That’s four players. I take the point about Nketiah’s injury record but Guessand was injured for a good chunk of his time with us before.

He’s a player with a poor record in the Preimer League who Villa were desperate to offload and playing in a position we already had enough, probably too many, players.

Obviously Sage doesn't rate him or he would be in the Euro squad, can we loan a loan player, maybe to Aston Villa 😎

I'm not convinced by Guessand.

Maybe he needs a run of games to get the sharpness that I think he lacks, but that's unlikely to happen unless we get some injuries.

I was a bit surprised we got him in as early as we did. He may be a useful here and there this season (obviously not now in Europe). Is there an option/obligation on his loan? On his performances so far he's done ok but we'd be mad to give Villa the 28m that they want to recoup.

Yeah I thought he did, we looked worse when he was injured. Horses for courses, but I thought we looked better with him on then off. Already said what I think about the others, but Gozo is another unknown that will hopefully turn out to be another gem, but no prem experience.

I'm not one for stats, but for the record last season he played 8 times, with 3 starts and notched up 330 minutes. In that there's one goal and one assist, so apparently that's 0.27 goals per 90 minutes.

Pino last season did 34 games, 28 starts and 2,080 minutes. In that there's 2 goals and 2 assists so 0.09 goals per 90 minutes.

So I dunno, doesn't seem like Pino was particularly effective himself and Nketiah was completely absent. Yes he didn't do too well with Villa, but as we all like to point out, Mateta was dog sh1t for years before he came good.

So, my opinion is that it's still a good loan given that when we brought him in, we hadn't signed Osario or Gozo, Mateta and Sarr could have left and let's be honest, the McNeil swap is more about moving Johnson on with his high wages than anything else. But that's just my opinion, Guessand could turn out to be pants this year.

Another example of our scattergun approach to the transfer windows.
Im not convinced by him, compared to Johnson, he was much more effective but still doesn't look good enough for the prem.

He didn't convince me at all last season and I didn't want him back.

I can understand why the club borrowed him, though. We got him quite early in the window at a stage where we didn't know which other deals would come off, and probably wanted to make sure we at least had somebody in the building.

Though he's a poor player, the options we had in his position at the outset of summer were also, in most cases, poor. Pino, Johnson, and Nketiah are not world beaters. At all. I suppose he made sense in that context.

If Sage really does like his forwards to press then Guessand has no chance. He seems half asleep mentally sometimes, and certainly displays little aggression or hunger. Not that I can see too many of our other forwards adapting to a pressing game any time soon.

I was much more affective than Johnson from my seat in the Holmesdale upper!!

He could be named in the squad if we get through the group stages.
