Death of the new deal?

Just thinking the other day that we've not see a first team player at Palace not sign a new deal since Eze or has there been one since?

Come to think of it you don't hear many players signing on new terms at many other clubs. Is this a change in player and agent behaviour to more routinely run down contracts because the less time they have the more likely they are to attract a transfer and signing on fee?

Mostly players chasing the money, No loyalty to the club, but then no loyalty by clubs to players. Prime example Lacroix going to Chelsea where his pay nearly trebled.

I think it was in Barry Silkman’s book I read that for all the players he had on his books, the more he could move them around from club to club the more he earned, which is why you see agents clearly trying to force a move for a player.
So I’d assume it’s not in the agent’s best interest if a player signs a new deal

You mean 'sign a new deal' not 'not sign a new deal'.

But i get your point. I think eze and olise signed a new deal at similar time but it did also work in club's favour also as upped olise's buyout clause and had one put in eze's. Similar to semenyo at b'mouth. Players like guehi and mateta have turned down new ones.

Daichi Kamada I suppose, technically signed a 1 year deal or if not an extension at least.

I dont know that we dont do this, but my hunch is that we dont offer improved deals early enough.

Take Marc for example:

Big old pay rise moving to us. But stayed on the same wage throughout, and by the end was very underpaid.

But it was clear, a month in that he was special. Captain material, destined for England etc etc.

My gut is that we waited until year 3 to start having contract chats. But I would have been going to him at the end of the first season, telling him how much we valued him and offering to bump him to 80k with a new 5 year.

And when we made him captain, I would have gone again, offering 100k or parity with the clubs highest earner.

It wouldn't lock him in for ever, but would buy us that extra year or so. Its also a much more proactive way of doing things.
