Munoz

No . Fans are fans and support the team unconditionally , but many people on the forum ( and elsewhere ) recognise that Crystal Palace Football Club is a business and if we, as fans , want to have a successful team to support , the club needs to be run as a successful business .

That’s not conditioning . That’s just the way it is . So people using business terms to discuss player movements are acknowledging the reality of our situation as fans of a business .

I think Munoz is great player but like others on this thread can understand the business logic of considering selling him .

If he leaves Palace ( unless he goes to Nottingham …) will wish him all the best .

100%.

The 2 go hand in glove. If we can maximise the sale prices we can reinvest in the squad and build a brighter future.

In Wilf we had a sellable asset and got nothing. Sakho and Benteke were also big signings who left for nothing. Those situations will damage the club and hamper our ability to reinvest in the squad.

We are now in a position where we are signing young and making profits and as a result the squad is getting stronger.

As with everything in life, we need to be pragmatic. If we keep Munoz for purely footballing reasons, next summer he'll be worth practically nothing. And we'll have to fork out for a replacement. If we sell now, we can replace him for nothing. That 20 odd million can be invested elsewhere.

And will the replacement be better? Munoz looked pretty sharp in the World Cup.

Fans seem preoccupied with business these days. I want points.

Also, we have to compete in Europe. We need squad.
New manager brings new ideas, if he feels Munoz best days are behind him and wants a younger player, its the clubs call. Once a player hits 30 and we can get a good return on our investment, then they go.
You will be wanting to bring an ageing Zaha back soon, after he refused to sign a contract for us, when offered and went on to fail elsewhere.

A factor that some may not be considering is that we currently have the maximum number of senior players in our squad, namely 25 broken down as 17 overseas and 8 home grown. I include JRS in that number for the simple reason that he’s the 8th home grown player and we sell him then we will only be able to replace him with another home grown player or only be allowed to register 24 players if we don’t.

The 17 current overseas players who aren’t classed as under 21s (the maximum number we can register remember) are, as far as I’m aware:

  1. Benitez
  2. Richards
  3. Riad
  4. Tomiyasu
  5. Munoz
  6. Mingueza
  7. Sosa
  8. Kamada
  9. Doucoure
  10. Lerma
  11. Devenny
  12. Mateta
  13. Strand Larsen
  14. Pino
  15. Sarr
  16. Guessand
  17. França
With Khalaili almost certainly arriving and our apparent desire for another CB and midfielder, neither of which positions seem to be attracting rumours of a home grown player, we’re either going to have to shift up to 3 of the above or exclude up to 3 from the PL squad.

I have to confess that I don’t know whether or not loaning surplus overseas players out means they are temporarily excluded from our quota of overseas players for the period of the loan. If it does, then that is one option. If it doesn’t then we will probably want to sell some.

Given that UEFA rules are even stricter and could well leave us having to only register a maximum of 23 players for the Europa league, the option to register the extra players for that competition isn’t a realistic option.

Finally as Khalaili appears to be being touted as a Munoz mark 2 in the making, and Mingueza is an established and experienced wing back from the toughest league outside the PL, we don’t need a 3rd player for that position and, ignoring the financial reasons for a moment, I can well understand why the club could be up for selling Munoz in this window

Muñoz has been fantastic, an absolute revelation, bringing a totally new dimension to our attacking play…something I always said we were lacking whilst we persisted with club Legend Joel Ward at right back.

The thing I will miss most if (when) he leaves will be scouring the pitch with my son whilst watching an attacking phase wondering where Danny boy is and then discovering him the furthest forward of all our players in the left wing position 😂

I have no idea what Zaha has to do with this.

We ideally need two quality players for each position. The Premier League is unforgiving and we have Europe.

How many more of our assets shall we sell for 'a good return'?

Further to my earlier post, the 8 home grown players are:
  1. Henderson
  2. Matthews
  3. Mitchell
  4. Wharton
  5. Hughes
  6. Nketiah
  7. McNeil
  8. JRS.
But there’s also the requirement to have at least 4 club trained players in Europe. There are only 2 on the list, Mitchell and JRS, which would take the squad size down to 23.

Bringing back Wilf for Europa League matches would give us an extra player for Europe. We would not need to include him in our Premier League squad if we didn’t need him there.

If Khalaili is signed then he and Mingueza would be the quality players for RB/RWB
If... The thing is Munoz is already great for us. Neither of those players have played in the Premier League. Why gamble when we have a proven player in the role. Especially to a rival Premier League club. If he was going abroad for a decent price and even then because he wanted to leave, then fair enough. Otherwise, what are we doing?

I hope all the new signings do well but selling our best for pennies doesn't seem like a good idea to me...

And you have no idea how well or how quickly they will adapt to the Premier League. We also have a new manager. That's a lot of potential for things to go tits up.

Which is what I implied in my earlier post. However, there's no point signing someone simply to make up the numbers. We have youngsters such as Drakes-Thomas who can step up if needed. I'm sorry but IMO, Wilf isn't the answer to any of our needs.

We're not selling for pennies. Lacroix went for a fair price where CBs are concerned. There's not been fee inflation for CBs as I showed in a post on the Lacroix thread. And getting £20m or more for the 30 yo Munoz would be a decent deal for us. I'll trust the club to make the right decision where Dani is concerned whatever that might be, but if we're going to bring in more new overseas players, as seems to be the intention, then we have to get rid of some, either by sale or, if it's an option, by loan.

I’ll be sorry to see Munoz go if this indeed what happens.
He was instrumental to the success of Glasner’s system and won double Player of the Year in his first full season.
Last season he wasn’t so effective, but the team as a whole didn’t function well in the latter half of the season and Munoz carried injuries.

You could see in the recent World Cup though how his ability is undimmed.
I think he’s amongst the best attacking right backs in world football in terms of his aggression, desire and attacking instinct.
He attacks the far post better than most wingers and is no slouch in the air.

His delivery could be better which may mean he won’t play for a PSG or Real Madrid.
But he’s good enough for an Athletico Madrid or Porto and he’s certainly better than Everton.

He sounds like a 🔔 end tbf mate

I am reminded of a supporter who
texted me a few weeks ago messaging that as a club we simply cannot progress to the "Next Level", we might have fleeting successes in that direction but it will not be lasting.
To him, avoiding relegation is all that matters and he believed that the club should have appointed Sean Dyche an experienced PL manager rather than someone with far less managerial experience and who has joined our club on the back of a single season success in France albeit a highly impressive one.

Every position higher in the Premier League is worth about an extra £3m. In the Europa League there's about a £5m difference in prize money between the group stage and the QFs, with the semis, final and winning the competition each paying an extra £5m or so on top of that.

Given how shite we were when he was injured last season, I think there's a reasonable argument that we could end up doing that fee in prize money if the new lad doesn't settle in.

Spurs now serious!y interested in signing Munoz, who is keen to play for a bigger Club !!
Price of £20m being mentioned.

Why all the negativity ? Lacroix is the only starter from last season sold & he will be replaced. 5 new players to date plus Franca, Ozoh, JRS are back from loan & appear to have involvement. Teams & squads always evolve. If Munoz does go, we have replacements & there will no doubt be contingencies if others go.
