Our present squad

Would love to see Franca, retained, play and be a great success!!

Yes, if only as an impact sub. He brings something a bit different and surely that's what you need in a squad.

It is very much as 16 man game now and the subs are key. Even after Christmas you could pretty much pick our subs and when they would come on e.g. Mateta for Larsen (or vice versa), Guessand for Pino and maybe Lerma for Hughes.

Sarr was rarely subbed as we didn't have alternatives (well Johnson) and the rest of the bench was essentially there to make up numbers/cover for injuries.

We just couldn't do say 3 subs after 60 minutes as the bench was too weak - hence OG's Sunderland moment.

Hopefully this season should be a big improvement.

In an earlier post I asked if Sage knew his first 11. There have been a few ins and outs since then, and I was wondering does Sage now know his starting 11?

The squad depth looks fantastic. My only concerns are:

- Sosa is a poor back up to Mitchell. We'd be weak down the left it he gets crocked.

- We're still short of a quality centre midfielder. I love Hughesy but fear his legs are going, similar with Lerma. I think it's unlikely Doucoure will return to his best but hope he proves me wrong. Is this the season Ozoh comes through?

The squad feels huge. Surely a few will be let go? - I would expect Franca, Esse and Devenny to be on their way out the door.

With the depth we have, I'd expect high tempo football with plenty of rotation in the attacking positions. This should allow us to be competitive in all competitions, which would be superb.
It's not that huge by PL standards. We currently have 25 players (17 foreign & 8 home grown) eligible for our squad plus the following youngsters who because they hadn't reached their 21st birthdays by the 1st January this year can be included as well (I've excluded the Academy players who are unlikely to feature in the PL).
  • Canvot
  • Esse (who looks like he'll be gong to FC Bruges)
  • Ozoh
  • Drakes-Thomas
In other words we currently are able for the first time in ages to register a full complement of players in the league.

I don't see França being moved on because 1) I think Sage likes him and 2) we'd make a big loss - not something we'll want to do in this window after the Johnson saga.

IMO view, Devenny is only likely to go if we get a midfielder who would be a starter or who would at least challenge for a starting place.

We also need to bear in mind that there are growing rumours that Munoz might be going if the right bid comes in.

Just my opinion of the state of play.
PS, if Khalaili eventually joins and no-one leaves we'll have to leave someone out of the our PL squad.

He might do for the first game against Everton but he's hardly had time to assess players coming back from the WC and our latest transfer arrivals, so longer term, I expect he might not yet have decided.

Pre season is a nightmare for managers now, especially new ones and especially with a lot of your squad coming back in dribs and drabs after a World Cup.Plus as everyone knows we do a lot of our business, or at least try on the last day of the window.

So basically I’ll be amazed if he knows his best eleven yet.

Unless their are injuries, he will start with the usual and introduce players as the season progresses.

If Munoz and Wharton are still here, bit early for JP and McNeil might start instead of Pino, we might have a couple more signings, but fair play if you’re right

Done a fair amount so far.

Is this the Europe factor?
