Evann Guessand

Drakes Thomas has not been given a proper chance despite looking excellent every time he’s had an opportunity. I hope Sage isn’t falling into the trap of preferring second rate seniors to high potential youngsters. We had enough of that with the previous two managers.

Do we actually have players who can take on and beat defenders?

😎

In one of the televised pre season games the commentators discussed Drakes Thomas.
It was said that Sage felt that Drakes Thomas needed more physical strength before he could be considered as a viable option.
He's still very young, so I'm sure that will come in time.
I was going to mention this too. He's not long turned 17. I 'm hoping he'll continue doing some training with the 1st team squad but ply his trade in the U21s with possible opportunities to feature in some cup games. I'd rather not see him go out on loan. I don't think it will do him any good. IMO, he's a rare talent who has skills that would be wasted or even damaged in non-league or lower league football. Like Dowman at Arsenal, the Liverpool lad, and when he was a youngster, Foden at City, keep Joel at home, where we can monitor and shape his development.

That's how I see it.

Based on last season, I'm not having Guessand at all. Some nice moments but, overall, terribly erratic and inconsistent. Disappeared from games far more often than he turned up. An average player, all told.

If Sage can get a tune out of him then all well and good, but I'm intrigued by this discrepancy between how palace and villa describe the deal.

If we are obliged to buy him after he plays X games or is involved in X goals, then he's under a lot of pressure. Let's say, for example, we have to buy him if he plays 25 games. He gets to 15 by Xmas and is doing okay, rather than brilliantly, but is starting to find form. That's pretty normal for many players.

The club then have a big decision. Do you keep playing him in the hope he'll kick on, and become a player we are happy to buy?

What if you keep picking him but he remains just 'okay'? Do you put him in deep freeze after 24 games? Or, do you freeze him after 17 so that you can use him in the run-in if we get injuries?

We are 'Birds on the same twig' apropos our assessment of Guessand last season.
A.Villa supporters have expressed their opinion of him and it is not complimentary.
Let us hope that we see a better version of Guessand in our colours in the forthcoming campaign.

If there’s room on the twig, I’m joining too.

He wasn’t given game time at Villa full stop, not sure what Villa fans are talking about? Where as Johnson was given plenty of opportunities and was very poor in front of goal.

We did try to buy Guessand, but blinked and Villa nipped in before us. I saw enough of him last season to see he suits our club and the fact he likes it at Palace says a lot. He will be a valuable acquisition when we hit those busy periods throughout the season.

In the U21s yes but it gradually gets coached out of them!

Yeah they coached all the skill out of zaha and moses before him!!

If they're good enough they'll make it. And some players may be good enough to take on and go past u18 and u21 players but when they come up against defenders like kylie walker when in first team then they understandibly struggle.

It's levels not coaches telling them not to use their skills and talent!!

Guessand played in 21 games for A.Villa whereas Johnson featured in 26 games for us so not a significant difference between the appearances of both players.

I have known an A.Villa supporter since the 80s and when we first signed Guessand on Loan his response was "You are welcome to him".

Yeh my Villa mate thinks he is god awful. The thing is, he scored a few goals for Villa. And Villa as a team were struggling in the early parts of last season, but he still managed to contribute something!

Johnson just never seemed to be able to contribute, and just seemed to lack any belief in his own ability.

Yup, I’m good with Guessand as well and will help our squad greatly when we are playing twice a week. Did well in European matches for us. Glad we have him aboard 🙂

He only scored 2 goals for A.Villa, both in the 'Europa League'.
The travails of Johnson at our club have been well documented on HOL.

I can only assume that we have not bought Guessand in on the strength of his form at Villa.
He is a longer term target for us and we nearly bought him last summer before he joined Villa.
It would appear that he seemed a good fit with the rest of the squad when he joined in January and the assumption has to be that Sage is on board with him joining having known him from France.
From his spell with us I was unconvinced, but perhaps I expected too much.
I thought he was a quick, powerful dribbler who could get us up the field quickly.
Instead he seemed to meander around the field without offering any real attacking thrust.

We certainly haven't bought Guessand for his goalscoring prowess.
He never scored for A.Villa in the PL, having played 13 games for them at this level.
At Nice he averaged 1 goal in 5 games in all competitions.
I was informed at the start of this year that playing out wide on the right was his most common position over the last 2 seasons and running at defenders was a common theme of his game.
Let's hope he makes a positive contribution in his second spell at our club.

i see him as a squad player who can play in a few positions across the front 3 and potentially as a No 10 (if we use that formation).

In the league with everyone being fit i see him mainly being used as an impact sub and then used in cup matches as we rotate etc.

We desperately needed options upfront last season and he did provide something, when fit.

As a cheap(ish) option it is not a terrible loan IMHO.

Our midfield has very few goals in it. We need 20 odd goals a season from it IMHO. If Evann can chip in a few that would help. AW also needs to find his scoring boots if he wants to secure his dream move to a Sky 6 club !
